Processing speed is wholly dependant on the processor... But if you are looking forward to change the processing speed-> change processor which inturn may lead changing the whole board and other ram, if your processor is an old one.

Adding RAM will help you maximise memory inturn allowing you to open multiple programs simultaneously, but still processing speed is the same until the processor is not changed.

If you want you can have a seperate graphics card which will give you some recognisable boost in performance and speed of applications, yet not a acknowledgable diffrence in processing speed though.

But change in processing speed surely requires yout o change processor. old ones like 1.8 - 2.4Ghz are pin processors and if you wanna upgrade those processors, you have to upgrade the ntire set of board+ram+processor! so should cost you reasonably more than expected

1. use the disc clean up utility regularly to clear temp and internet files

2. regular defragmentation thru system tools in accessory helps in keeping the drives in healthy condition and speeds up the system.

3. Also the Ram is prime factor for keeping the system fast
depending upon the type of your PC usage.

What are my options to increase processing speed and RAM rather than purchase a new desk top

The RAM can be bumped to 2 GBs (2 x 1 GB PC3200) the processor you won't be able to. I'd recommend looking at refurbed computers I'm sure you could find one at least twice as good as this for $100 or less.

Speed Up Your PC/Notebook!! - Windows

Note - We are not responsible for any Damage/Data Loss!!

Many People have observed that the speed of the PC/Notebook is really slow. It makes people mad when it take minutes to even open a File or Song.Certain steps would ensure that this would be taken care of.

1. Basic Settings - RAM is the best measure of the Speed. More the RAM, more the processing speed and vice - versa. In an experiment, it was shown that XP can run even on 128 MB while most of the other Operating System Failed. So, if you are using XP, you should be glad enough to know that.

Ideally RAM should be more than 256MB. ( Higher - Better Results )

2. Norton - In a report, it was indicated that the speed of PC was slow due to Norton Applications. However, Norton do officially introduce patches that would fix this. I would advise you to use a Different Anti - Virus, but even if you want to use Norton, Make sure it should be updated. For Norton update, Right Click the Norton icon on the Lower Bottom corner of the task bar and click on Update. Once updated, it would improve the situation.

3. Virus, Adware,Spyware, Malware, Keyloggers - Always aware of all these. If you have any one of these installed/Present in your PC/Laptop, this is dangerous. These could make permanent registry changes and crash your PC. Make your PC work like insane that you need to wait even more than 5 minutes for an application to open. The hardest part, your data could be stolen without your authorization.

Install an Anti - Virus and Scan the Complete PC/Notebook to make sure everything is all Set to GO.

4. Data - You might have observed whenever you want to save Data, the first option you get is Save it - Windows C. This is the Drive ( On most Occasions ), where your Windows Files are situated, Always try to avoid data in the driver where you have Saved Windows Files. You would see an improvement.

5. There are Few other steps like Disk Clean and Defragmentation of the Hard Drive that would also help you.

6. Virtual Memory - You must have hear regarding Virtual Memory. This is the best bet , if you want to increase RAM speed without adding physical RAM.This option works like miracle.

There is a Well Known Trick for XP Users - They could increase the Speed tremendously by Disabling the Group Policy Option in your Computer.

7. Registry Clean - If your system is slow after a recent Virus/Adware attack ( Even after removal ), or might work in a strange way, after you have installed a Software/Driver or due to some change you made , it would mean that there has been a change in Windows Registry. You need to Fix this. Either Restore the PC or Download Registry Cleaning Software.

I hope the above point's would be able to Fix 99% of the problems associated with Speed.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Hi! Can I add yet more RAM to my PC?

Whether you will get an increase in speed or not depends on which operating system you are using and what applications you are running. If you are just surfing the web and running spreadsheet or word processing - I doubt you would see much difference. If you go to and let it scan your system - it will tell you what upgrade options you have.

your p.c has four slots for ram 533Mhz. if your ram is low then you can purchase extra ram to speed up your computers processing power. either 512Mb or 1Gb sticks are available for your motherboard at 533Mhz. if this is not sufficient then you will have to upgrade your board to a newer more powerfull model. changing motherboard is not replacing the whole computer. see computer repair shop or vendor.

I am using 802.11b/g wireless lan. my signal

Increasing signal may increase speed, but getting closer to the router would yeild the same result iif that is going to work. You would do it by going to the management page for your router, and adjusting the "antenna" or "signal" strength to maximum.

On a linksys the default ip for that page is, on other routhers you can look it up in the paperwork or on the manufacturers website.

Hope this helps!!
