The memory modules are located beneath the keyboard. Instructions are on page 6-34 of the following instruction manual (the URL provided sends you directly to a downloadable PDF file of the manual. A PDF file requires the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software): h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00502970/c00502970.pdf

Lists memory compatible with your machine.
Memory Type: DDR PC3200, DDR (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 4GB
Slots: 4icon_note.gif Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

I have also found that the memory occasionally is not recognized. To fix remove the ram and clean electrical contacts with a clean pencil eraser. (Rub the contacts to clean.) Then replace memory. (My machine failed to boot, cleaning the contacts fixed the problem.

HP/Compaq P4 2.8 GHz Desktop PC alarm is going off. my computer won't start up and there is a 'light bulb' icon that is flashing red

This is a Beep code for Memory Failure or System board failure. Mostly this should be due to RAM ( System Memory ) failure. Try reseating the Memory.
There will be two Memory modules in the system, try booting with only memory module and if it works. the swapping of memory does not help, the system board must be faulty.

HP Compaq DC5100 Microtower gets 4 long beeps at bootup.

That is a memory mismatch code. Try installing just one memory stick at a time.
Sometimes the memory just isn't seated in all the way.

How to change memory in hp/compaq laptop nx6325

You'll find a small panel on the back that you can unscrew to add morememory/ram (or change the current card). Here's an illustrated guide (it's for a Toshiba laptop but the process is identical except for the location of the panel):http://www.fonerbooks.com/laptop_2.htm
