Question about Canon PowerShot A85 Digital Camera

1 Answer

A85 Dead During a normal session, switching from picture-taking mode to view mode, the lens would not retract and the picture in the view froze with the current image. I could not turn off the camera. After a while, the batteries got very hot, so I removed them. I took out the CF card. Later, I replaced the batteries and the put the card back in. The camera worked very briefly, but the LCD view would not work, displaying flashing lines on a black background. New batteries didn't help. The camera won't take pictures at all, and the lens is still stuck open. In the state it's in now, nothing will appear on the LCD. I've tried cleaning and realigning the battery contacts. The CF card pins look even. The camera has never been dropped or banged around.

Is there any way to change the tags on this post? It's more a camera not powering up problem than anything else, and has nothing to do with cleaning the lens or dropping the camera.

Camera lens wont open or close after being dropped. it won't turn on and take pictures

Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

Low battery maybe? Try holding camera firmly in one hand, with camera on and in record mode, and strike in on its edge firmly on the heal of your other hand. This technique is often sucessful with temporary camer 'quirks' like freezing, lens not fully retracting, etc.

I need more information to help with this problem. What model is the camera? Is it a single-lens reflex camera, or a camcorder? The more details I can get, the better I will be able to research and recommend solutions. Thanks.
