Question about Canon PIXMA iP4200 InkJet Photo Printer

Printer not printing?

I have an ip4200 printer which is set up correctly and all the ink cartridges are correctly installed. However when I go to print - nothing comes out - it prints blank pages. Please help ??

    Yep the tape is definitely off the print heads :)

    Hi BJ thanks for all your help :)

    The printer is virtually new as I have never used it (lazy I guess) but I purchased it at the time I purchased my iMac a couple of years ago.  The ink cartridges were all new and I removed the tape when I installed them.  The red lights indicate the ink cartridges are full.

    I went to the link you provided to try and print a test page as per the instructions below.. the funny thing to note was when I went into my system preferences, the "Utility" icon was greyed-out (as  though it was unavailable) - here are those instruction below:

    • In the Apple menu select System Preferences

    • Open Print & Fax.

    • Make sure the correct printer is selected and, depending on OS version, click 'Open Print Queue...' or 'Print Queue...'.

    • Click the Utility icon.

    • Select the printer, then click 'Maintenance'.

    Thanks heaps for all this BJ :) I think perhaps the ink cartridges may be old and therefore dried out?... I will have to get some new ones and then try it out.  Not sure when I'm going to have time to do that but will definitely check back with you once I do.

    Should I keep this thread open?

    If you follow all the steps for deep cleaning the heads, then you may well have a bad print head.

    Please, let us know if that is the case. We will try and find a source where you can purchase a replacement print head if you like. (Canon, of course is one possible source.)

    Did these ink cartridges come w/ the printer a couple o' years ago?

    I don't know how long these things will last - even sealed and packaged - b4 the ink begins to lose moisture.

    The link I "thought" I provided for you was to direct you to instructions for cleaning the print head. Unfortunately, all the links I gave you took you to the same spot. (My apologies for that.) From there you can make some selections to get the information you need.

    You're right. The printer utility icon being greyed out is significant.

    (04) How long is your USB cable (from your printer to your iMac)?

    (05) Make sure that the USB cable is short and a high quality (shielded) cable. Plug it directly into your iMac.

    (06) Uninstall the drivers you've installed off of CD for this printer and download the most recent ones from Canon and install them.

    (07) Install any OSX updates that are available.

    (08) Check the Owner's Manual (also available for download from Canon) for directions on cleaning the print head. (Unfortunately, I can't open the DMG file - I'm using Windows.)

Installed new ink on ip4200. Black will not print on test page "horizontal box", other colors print. Any suggestion on why the black won't print? Thanks.

The ink tank requires air to flow through it so ink can move from the reservoir to the print heads.
  1. Confirm there is no orange tape across the top of the ink tank

  2. If the orange tape is as shown in Figure (A), it is properly removed.

  3. If the orange tape is as shown in Figure (B), remove the remaining tape to the level shown in Figure (A).

  4. Make sure each ink tank is snapped into the printer.

My iP4200 will not print anything after i change the cartridge and no error or falshing lights were found

This is a common problem and can usually be solved by doing the following:

1.) Remove the cartridge from the printer and ensure that the clear sticker placed over the contacts of the cartridge has been removed.
2.) Clean the contacts of the ink cartridge with tissue paper. Surgical alcohol may be used as a solvent.
3.) Use the software that came with your printer to clean the ink heads. The ink cartridges need to be installed in the printer. You may need to Deep clean the ink heads several times. Around 3-5 times seems to be the magic number.

I changed two colour ink cartridges on my Canon iP4200 printer. Now it won't print colour. The pattern check does not print any colour.

You might want to double check to make sure that your printer takes two color cartridges? If I remember correctly, the Pixma takes one black and one color cartridge? If you put a color cartridge in the black ink assembly that would cause it to stop printing.

Double check and make sure that you have one black cartridge in the correct place and one color on the other side.

I would try using something like rubber renew on the pickup rollers and make sure that the paper is being fed correctly. If this is happening then start looking at the ink.

Open the printer and remove the ink. Clean around the ink carriage and the under the ink with alcohol and a cotton swab. Pay special attention to areas with copper contacts. Some printers will let you re-run a cleaning utility from their system menu or the computer printer properties. Keep in mind too that some printers will not print correctly, even with full ink, if the exact type of ink it expects you to have is not installed. If all else fails change out the ink, but double check that the ink is correct against the manual or written instructions inside the printer. Not every cartridge that fits the printer necessarily is the right type and using the wrong ink can cause unexpected results.

Printing Problem

Look for ink clogged on the printer head. Run cleaning or deep cleaning after installing the new cartridge before printing. Take nozzle check print.

Ink Cartridge Settings

Have you tried Canons FAQ? They suggest checking the grayscale box, which apparently only works with certain kinds of printing (duplexing and borderless will still use colors). I don't understand how colored inks are used to create black, but that's what they claim. Anyway, here's the link:
