Can't Get CD-RW or DVD-ROM Headphone Jack to Work

By Phoebe - usenet poster

This problem applies equally to a CD-ROM, a CD-RW and a DVD-ROM:

I cannot get sound out of the built-in headphone jack on any of these
units. These drives should all have bult-in amps for the 'phones, such
as they are, but nothing is coming out. I've tried disabling digital
playback on all these units, but that didn't work. I even tried a
different set of 'phones, but to no avail.

Any ideas or suggestions? I can't believe that all three of these
units are defective, so *something* must be wrong.

Thanks in advance!

My system:

Gigabyte 8HIXP using onboard sound
P4 2.53 cpu
Antec 400W PSU
768 megs RAMBUS memory
Hercules Prophet III video card
160 gig RAID 0 drive (80 gigs x 2)
WD 120 gig HD
TDK CD-RW
Benq 1648A DVD-ROM
250 meg Zip drive

Thanks; that makes sense. I'll just pop by Radio Shack and pick up a
speakers/headphone switchbox.

Howdy!

        ButOfCourse.

DVD audio is not stored like CD audio, so it has to have a computer
of SOME sort to reconstitute it.  And, said computer isn't built into
DVD-ROM drives.

That headphone jack is for audio CD-ROMs only.

Let me amend my first message:

I now have all three drives playing back audio CDs through the
headphone jack. However, I still can't get sound through the jack on
the DVD-ROM when playing a DVD.

Oops, sorry.

Re-read your post and saw that you had already tried disabling digital
playback.  I had your identical situation and disabling digital playback
solved my problem for both my CD burner (TDK) and DVD/CDROM (Toshiba)

Unfortunately I don't have any other suggestions.

Thanks. I just can't understand why I can hear CD audio through the

You must de-select "digital playback"  These devices will only play back
through the earphones in the analog mode.

Playback through the speakers works fine in the digital mode.
