For whatever reason, it won't open when I tell it to. I can hear a sound when I press the button of it trying to open, but that's it. I've taken it apart, but the obstruction is not on the outer plastic, but rather something deeper into the device which I'm not sure I can do. Is my only solution to take it in for repair or is it possible to do it myself?

CD Drives are pretty simple, if you take it out of the computer you can remove the 4 screws around the outside and pull the cover off. At that point the next best bet is to hook it back up to power and try to eject it and watch what happens.
Another option is the take a paper clip and unbend it and put it into the *Tiny* hole in the front of the drive, that's the reset and it may repair it
