If your DVD player has HDMI, use it. If not, you'll need to buy a cord for it. Look on the back of the TV and the back of the DVD player. There should be colored connectors on each one. On the TV, it will be an input. On the DVD player, it'll be an output. There will be either 3 connectors or 5 connectors on the TV and DVD player. You'll need a cord with either 3 connectors on each end (red, white, yellow), or one with 5 (red, white, blue, green, red). Once you figure out which cord you'll need, buy it from any store that sells TVs and hook it up. The link below has pictures Video Connectors Tutorial Hardware Secrets
It sounds that you are connected the TV with DVD player Via AV cable. In this case, no RF channels won't go. You have to select its AV option. Check it. Refer the user manual for TV.
Your DVD/VCR player does not have a volume but your TV will control the volume for it. If you do not hear any thing is because you did not hook up the TV right.

If the cable box needs to be set to 4, the TV will need to be set to 4 as well as the dvd player. The hookup should be cable box to dvd player to the TV for your system to work. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks.
