Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Fridge problem I have a hotpoint side by side model #CSX22BCXA bought around 1995. It has worked great but now the fridge is starting to lose its cool and the freezer isn't staying cold enough to keep stuff frozen. There is frost building up on the back wall of freezer from top to bottom. Everything seems to be running. The outside walls of fridge are still chilled. Can you tell me what's going on? Thanks, Paul

You have a defrostion issue reed to remove the back panel in the freezer behind this panel is the evaperator coil needs to be melted down because it is full of ice and frost, ahair drier will work well, put several towells down under the bottom of the evaperator to catch water runoff, after defrosting the coil inspect the defrost heater or heaters some of these can have one or two heaters the heaters are located behind metal gaurds in the evaperator if either of the heaters are bad (both)need to be replaced, if they show good then bad defrost timer or bad defrost termination thermastat wiring diagram behind frount bottom grill

sometimes its just easer to replace the defrost termination thermostat get a 55F for about 15.00 bucks and just change it, if it works thats the problem, if not, it may be the element or defrost timer

Freezer & fridge works great for two weeks then stops cooling. The freezer coils have a sheet of ice covering them everytime it stops working. I can thaw out the freezer and start it up again and it...

its probably the defrost heating element located just below the evaporator coil, remove the evaporator cover and check the terminals on the element, then disconnect one wire off the element and check it for continuity

Refrigerator not keeping things cool and freezer

this is usually caused by dirt either around the fan if its a built in fridge, or around the cooling fins at the back of the fridge.Make shure you unplug the fridge before investigating what is wrong.

Freezer working but fridge not cold

If the freezer really is operating at its proper temperature of +- 5 degrees F, then the likely problem is the failure of the fan that circulates the cooled air between the two cabinets. This fan is located behind the liner of either the freezer or refrigerator and is not an expensive part; the labor may amount several times the parts cost.
Since you did not list the model number for your unit, you will have to search on your own to find an illustrated parts breakdown of your fridge. You might start at the Sears parts department website as they have a broad range of manufacturers and models displayed with line drawings which can help you assess the difficulty in either doing it yourself or having it done.

Fridge/freezer cooling inefficiently

Either the repair guy did not wire up the heater correctly or he replaced the wrong part, if the heater was good it was likley to be the defrost thermostat...I would call the repair guy back to check.

I have a Hotpoint model HSS221FMD & works when I unplug, & thaw freezer. Then after a while running, the cooling stops on the fridge side & the freezer cools a little & frosts up

This sounds like a bad thermostat. not a very expensive fix but i would call in the pro's mainly due to its location and frail parts. This should be around $100. Give or take a little. Good luck.
