Question about Dishwashers

1 Answer

Hi - I have tried all the usual tricks of running an empty load with vinegar, and the food particle filter seems to be the kind that isn't removable. Whenever I run a load, there is enough left over particles on the dishes - especially the top shelf, that I either have to wash all the glasses by hand, or run at least one more cycle. I have a standard size hotpoint built-in dishwasher. Please let me know if there is a way to clean the filter, or an alternative method so that the dishes are actually clean after a cycle. Thank you!

Our ten year old kitchenaid dishwasher doesn't get the dishes clean. there is food particles left on dishes if we don't completely rinse our dishes. is there a cleanout filter that needs to be emptied?

Locate your dishwasher's filter. It is typically on the floor of the dishwasher. Pull out the bottom rack and look along the bottom of the dishwasher until you find it.

Use a paper towel or sponge to remove any residue or debris that has accumulated on the outside of the filter once you locate it. On some dishwashers, the filter area does not detach or open, so your hand cleaning will stop here. On other models, you can unscrew the filter housing to access the inside and clean any debris from the filter area. Simply wash out the filter using soap and water, then reassemble once cleaning is complete.

Further clean the filter area by pouring a quart of white vinegar into the bottom of the empty dishwasher. Turn to a wash cycle and allow the dishwasher to run with the vinegar cleaning the mechanisms, including the filter.

To deep-clean your dishwasher and the filter periodically, mix the following ingredients together in a bowl, then pour into the bottom of the dishwasher: 1/2 cup salt, 1/2 cup baking soda and 1 cup bleach. Let the mixture sit in the bottom of the empty dishwasher overnight. The next morning run a wash cycle, letting the bleach mixture clean and disinfect the dishwasher thoroughly.

Dishes covered in a white film & not getting very clean.

Hi. This will be the result of mineral build up overtime that will reside in the circulation/drain hoses and sprayer arms, as well. This can be cleaned out by using a vinegar/water based solution. This is affective, but the usual culprit will soon return overtime. The vinegar is to be added to the unit upon starting the initial cycle. Two passes will most likely do the trick, but it will not leave behind a protective barrier like most aftermarket industrial dishwasher cleaners will do. The leftover smell can be quite pungent, also. I would also recommend to clean out your fine particle filter located in the sump assembly. This is a gathering area for particles that can clog the unit and cause these fine leftover food particle to recirculate during the wash, thus, causing the white film, as well.

A great two prong approach to this issue will be to clear out the filter and chopper assembly, if equipped, and run a strong mineral removing agent. Click here to purchase dishwasher magic, if you wish or you can simply use the vinegar method i mentioned above. I would use the industrial agent. It is more effective. A good water softener added to the home plumbing would be a great idea to eliminate the build up.

Has a bad oder

There are a few ways that people use to clean a smelly dishwasher .. First check the strainer at the bottom of the dishwasher for any food residue .. remove that before treating the washer .. then you can do some or one or all of these to see what works for you
If the strainer is messy, pour a good layer of baking soda in the strainer , then pour in some vinegar, it will foam and clean the strainer .. periodically adding vinegar until the foaming stops.
Put a cup or two of vinegar in the washer and run an empty cycle , use it on hot water cycle.
Put in some bleach and run an empty cycle
Put some lemonaide mix in the washer and run it ..

Good luck

Bad Smell

Try cleaning the filter screen in the bottom and under it as food particles get caught in and under it and rot. Afterward run an empty load with two cups of vinegar.

Does not clean the dishes

Hello, I can help you. With the dishwasher empty, toss in two cups of white vinegar and run the machine on its longest and hottest cycle. This will thoroughly clean the machine.

Now put in a load of dishes, be sure to run the kitchen faucet til the water is as hot as it will get and then start your machine.

Kenmore elite dishwasher leaves food particles on dishes

If someone is putting dishes in the washer and obstructing the spray ams that would cause food to stay on dishes. After loading dishwasher and pushing in baskets make sure the spray arm doesnt hit any of the dishes causing them to not clean properly. If that doesnt work or is definately not your problem try removing the spray arm and seeing if it has food inside of it. Some times they get food build up in them and need to be flushed out.

A white nasty film on the dishes after washing

Check to make sure there are no bits or trash or paper around the bottom parts of your dishwasher. Place a bowl of vinegar on the bottom rack of your empty dishwasher. Run your dishwasher through a complete cycle.

Maytag dishwasher quiet series 400. Dishes have hard stuck on grit and food particles after rinsed and dried.

Very common problem is soap build up in these machines. Try putting it into a wash cycle with no dishes, and no soap. Let it wash for about 5 minutes, and then open the door. If you see alot of soap suds, then soap build up is the problem. Try doing a couple loads with no soap, and no dishes, and throw a cup of vinegar into the machine halfway through the wash. Repeat as necessary. This should solve your problem.

Dishwasher is leaving food particles everywhere

Dishwashers need cleaning too :) Take a look inside your dishwasher: Click here http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=41284 then click on PUMP AND MOTOR diagram on the left. Number 47 on that diagram is a filter. Make sure that filter is clean. Then, using a dishwasher cleaner (see below) run your dishwasher through the entire cycle on empty. This should help, post back if it doesn't. Dishwasher cleaners: 1. Vinegar - good cheap solution, if you don't mind the smell :). Dump a gallon inside an empty dishwasher tub and start up the regular wash cycle. 2. CLR - I've been told it works, but never tried myself 3. Dishwasher Magic - This stuff works pretty good. One bottle per use. http://www.appliancepartspros.com/accessories.aspx?part_id=2675393&cat=62&rdr=%2faccessories.aspx%3fcat%3d62 Hope this helps, APP tech http://www.AppliancePartsPros.com
