Sounds like the driver for the sound card needs to be installed.

RIGHT click My Computer, select Properties and the click on Device Manager.

Any devices having a problem will have a yellow exlamation mark alongside them. I suspect that your sound card will be shown thus.

RIGHT click the Sound Card and click on Reinstall Driver. If you have a disk, make sure that it is in the CD drawer. When asked if you want to search the Internet, select Not at this time (if you have a disk) or Yes if you do not have a disk.

This should install your drivers and fix the problem.

Good luck.

Possibilities are that sound driver might have been corrupted during restore.
So try reinstalling the driver from the mother board's driver cd.
It should do the job for you.

Rarely the worse happens when the mother board's sound card is corrupted, even so you can add an adiitional sound card to mother board and can get back the sound..

But mostly it is the first situation you are facing,.. so reinstalling the sound card driver should do the job for you. It is only the software oriented problem

Maybe your Graphic Card has overridden your system default audio setting by changing your Graphic Card to the primary sound device. I recommend checking to see what device is setup as your default device. You can do this by right clicking on your sound device icon and choosing playback devices. If your sound device is missing, right click inside the box and choose show disabled devices and enable whatever device is listed as disabled. Keep in mind, you should make sure the device you want to use is setup as your primary device.

hi steve
You need to go to the dell website and download the latest drivers for the sound first.
after you install those drivers, go to device manager and check if there is any Audio and sound option there or not.

No sound in the system

Did you check if there is an audio device in the Device Manager (from the Control Panel -> System) ?
If not, you probably need to install the right audio driver for your computer.

I have built in speakers and for some reason it tells me that i have no sound device

The Sound Device it is talking about refers to sound hardware on your computer. Look at your Control Panel, then Device Manager, then look at Sound, video and Game controllers. That will tell you if you have Audio hardware installed, into which speakers get plugged. If you want more help, please do not hesitate to ask.

Inspire P7800 Speaker System, no sound

First thing is to check the device manager, to see if the audio device is working. Next is to check all the sound settings in XP.
Just to make sure, I'd suggest you also try plugging a headset or other speaker set to make sure it is not the speakers.
Detailed instructions for audio troubleshooting in XP are here.

Hope it works out.
