Question about Toshiba Satellite A105 Notebook

1 Answer

Dark screen Toshiba Satellite A105 laptop purchased april 06 has given me absolutely NO trouble in any fashion. Last night I was using it normally, then let it hibernate. Today, the computer works (I can see vague images outlined on the monitor, I see cursor moving and windows opening), but the monitor is not illuminated. If I hold it just right I can see it is working normally in every other way but the screen is totally dark. Any input on what might be wrong? Or where to begin. The machine is, of course, out of warranty (and I am kicking myself for dropping that ball). Thanks, TinaReno Arkansas, USA

    Thanks, Jerry :-)

I tried the brightness adjustment (that's how I figured out the screen itself is still functioning); by pressing the right Fkeys I was able to change the contrast incrementally.

I was considering the purchase of an external monitor, so I read the manual and with much contorting and repositioning of a very bright table lamp was able to change the setting to accept that.

I will advise anyone with this problem in the future that this was all VERY difficult, as following the cursor is next to impossible with a dark screen, but if you turn off everything else in the room and rest the laptop screen-down under the lamp and hold the palm rest portion with your chin, you can move the cursor (and barely see it moving) to select your options. I could not do this mid-day, even with the drapes closed. I tried again at night and discovered it can be done!

I am such a novice, I thought perhaps connecting an external monitor was too simple, and I suspected servicing this problem might be pricey. I am pleased to discover my thinking wasn't that off.

Jerry, if your suggestion to connect another monitor works I will be able to move everything off the drive before I hand it to a service center. It will also give me time to save for the expense of repair while still using my computer. My only sacrifice right now is its mobility.

I know I should have kept the machine under extended warranty, and this is the price for letting that lapse, but your suggestion has relieved me. There's hope!

Thank you for taking the time to respond.
I am glad I subscribed to FixYa, and I'm going to keep subscribing in the future.
I will also recommend this service to everyone I know.

    Thanks so Much.

Check to see that the brightness is turned up. Refer to the user manual of how to set the brightness. Call the tech support for your computer if you cannot resolve this with the instructions.

If there is a defect, most likely the backplane lamp, and or its power supply may have failed. This can be a bit expensive to service.

You can however, connect an external monitor to your laptop if it has the option to allow this feature. Refer to the instruction manual about how to turn on the option after the monitor is connected.

When you send the computer for service, they will change the back plane lamps and the back plane power supply if these are changeable in the model you have. If not, they will have to change the complete LCD panel.

In anycase, if the computer is out of warranty this repair will be on the expensive side.

I think you need to do a power cycle. remove the battery and use tha AC adapter alone. If it boots, then thats good. U can try also booting on safe mode by pressing F8. Then re start the notebook in normal mode. If it wont works then i think u need to reinstall windows as a last resort. U need to use TOSHIBA RECOVERY DISK this time.
