Scanjet G4000 Since replacing my hard-drive can't get unit identified to function. Told unit not connected. Tried to remove program but failed ( Was told that solution to problem was to remove program then reinstall.) Solution would be greatly appreciated.

Try just reinstalling without uninstalling first. Sounds like when you replaced your hard drive, that you did not reinstall the driver for the scanjet. The installation disk will have the driver for the device.

the leads from your MOTHERBOARD TO YOUR HARD DRIVE make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

even something as small as a faulty electrical extension or fan lead can cause you problems

computers need all of the data and electrical current to travel through every working device and to have an end to be able work properly


motherboard and a hard drive any leads between them will fail before your motherboard or your hard drive if its a flat ribbon 40 pin type IDE replace it this will be the first to fail

check all electrical power input and extensions make sure they are securely seated even the cd/dvd floppy drives need to have current go through make sure these drives are working


also check the Cmos battery and computer RAM modules make sure they are securely seated with no dust built up or in the sockets on some motherboards cmos batteries are soldered in

check you CPU make sure its securely seated and has thermal grease might be getting to hot


another possible reason could be a memory dump you might be running to many programs at the one time putting to much strain on the CPU central processing unit

I installed a new hard drive into a dell dimensions 2350 and I am trying to install windows xp from disc. it says "please wait while setup formats the partition" and the bar is at 2% for an hour?...


Hello,

First try selecting "Quick Format" when you get to the place where you format the drive.

If that fails there is a program called diskpart.exe in C:\Windows\System32. Put your drive in a functional computer.

To do this you have to know the size of your drive.

Run diskpart.exe. Then enter "List Disk".

This file YOUR drive in the list. You identify it by it's size. If the drive can not be identified by size then EXIT.

The enter "Select Disk A" where A is the NUMBER of YOUR drive from the list "List Disk" showed you.

WARNING! Under NO circumstance select disk 0!

Then enter "Clean".

Then take the drive and put it back in your computer.

It will make it through the XP installation process after that.

This sounds like your hard drive has failed or the connection is faulty.

Disconnect the tower from the mains, take off the cover and check the ribbon connector between the hard drive and the motherboard, one may have come adrift. If so, remake the connection, if not, then the drive has failed.

The only way around it is to replace it with another and re-install the operating system

My OptiPlex GX60 is not recognizing its hard drive? Several weeks ago had to restore with install CD. On a restart, wouldn't load, report said no hard drive.


Most likely it is a Hard disk drive failure

Reseat the cable connections, see if the drive is detected, if not, replace the drive

The fan is very noisy


The post begs for the obvious answer: Replace the fan.

Now to be more polite, first you need to identify the failing fan and replace it.

A desktop system can have several fans. Case/processor fan (you can test to see if this is the effected fan by unplugging it for a minute or two from the motherboard (a couple minutes will not hurt the system).

The video card may have a fan on it (Often on the underside if a mini tower) Some video card fans can be easily removed but finding replacement fans can be a challenge. Normally if a video card fan fails, replace the video card.

Most often, the failing fan is in the power supply unit or PSU. If you are handy with electrical components, you can remove the PSU, remove the fan and replace it. If you are not handy electrically, replace the PSU.

Higher end system may have card cage fans to help cool hard drive/expansion cards and others have fans specifically to coll hard drives.

Most manufacturers have spare parts where you can buy parts or you can use google to find specific replacement parts or fan suppliers.
