Right-click My Computer, choose Manage, then click on Disk Management. If you are prompted about Initialize and Convert, you don't need to Convert, but you DO need to Initialize the disk.

Once the disk is initialized the OS can use it, but you will still need to create a partition and format it. Find the next disk in the list on the bottom right and right-click the box (it'll say Disk 1 or something like that) and choose New Partition or New Volume to create a new partition or volume -- partitions are for Basic disks, volumes are for Dynamic disks - usually I use Basic disk.

Hit F1 while in Disk Management for more help.

I CONNECTED THE EXTERNAL HD (HDS5C3015ALA632) UNDER WIN XP, NO PROBLEMS. THEN I CONNECTED TO ANOTHER PC WITH WIN 7, PC DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE HD AND ASKS TO FORMAT IT. JEAN FRANCOIS BELGIUM

It is because your computer which is windows xp is not able to be updated to windows seven. And when you format it you will loose everything xp. But then you can put everything windows seven on it.

Need drivers for toshiba external hard disk s/n: 0214060603 - for operating system win xp service pack 3 please

There is no need for any drivers for an external Hard Disc unless you are using Win98 or an older version.XP / Vista and Win7 are all plug and play enabled. As soon as you plug a healthy device into your USB port a pop up notice will come and after a few seconds the system will recognize the device and becomes fully functional.

Simple Tech HD failing- takes 4 hours to tranfer 512 MB!?

Not exactly a solution but I have had the same problem with one of these Simple Tech Signature Mini 320's for a while. Real finicky. Will only be recognized on direct connected to MB USB ports and even then with Win 7 or XP I get the "This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port." no matter what ports I connect it to. While having this issue on this "main" computer I have previously connected it to some other computer (don't remember which, now) and it connected at 2.0 speed. What's going on??

Model ST315005FDM201-RK 1.5 TB external hard driver needed

Win 98 simply cannot address a drive that big. There is no way to make it work. The "Other" PC's must be running either XP, Vista, or Win 7 all those CAN address that size drive.

USB Connection problems

it definitely is an incompatibility issue. but, it is not the hard drive. vista and win.7 have unseen so called built in driver issues. that m.s. have not been able to repair.
if you are running win.7 make sure that you get all of the latest updates.. xp was by far so far the best o.s. they have come out with yet. vista and 7 really slows down a pc so what does that tell you.. and adding drivers might be the solution. check with the h.d. manufacturer onlin to see if they have any fixes for this problem....good luck freind..

Hi, I have an external hard drive GHD225U40 that

go to device manager on computer, (while the external hardrive is connected) find the drive on the list and right click it or somthing, and look to see if you can update any drivers on it..this is more then likely your problom because when you switched from xp to 7 it might have wiped out the drivers for the external hardrive

When I plug my wd 250 hd into my laptop (Win XP), my hd sounds funny (it makes like 3 "clank" noises, like when trying to read the drive). Win XP will recognize that a usb connection has been made but...

Those 'clank' noises are definitely not a good sign--the drive is failing and is trying to spin up but is unable to.

The only suggestion I have is to get pricing on sending it off to a company who can repair the hard drive and (hopefully) recover any data you have on it.

Sorry for the bad news...

250 GB Western Digital external HD not detected by Win 98 SE

If you installed SE on Win 98, then here is a link to a generic USB driver that should work with your HD. If at some point you decide to install a newer OS or go dual-boot, you can always partition the HD so you don't lose any storage. Best of luck.

Laptop Won't Recognize External HD

You can try opening the device manager in Window XP and uninstall the external hard disk (make sure you show unplugged devices).
Then replug the drive again, and it should reinstall the drivers.

Acomdata external harddrive is not recognize on vista

I had a similar issue with windows 2008 and windows 7. the drive lost all its info and had to be reinitialized under both of those O.S.'s..
You can try that as long as it doesn't have any data you need.. Once you do that the drive will work and you can start using it. The file system under vista and above is slightly different than xp.
