Question about Canon Pixma MP800 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Black print is skipping

The black print (large tank) prints sharp for approximately a 1/2 inch (2-1/2 lines) of print and then has no print for the next 1/2" and then prints beautifully again.

I replaced the print head and large black ink cartridge. No improvement.

Thanks!

This occurred half way through a **** of HP premium Ink Jet paper, however I just tried a piece of linen stationary and a piece of card stock with the same problem.

    Thanks! David

  • depropst Apr 11, 2008

The problem is not a blur. it is a repeating 2-1/2 lines of print followed by a no printing at all of the same distance. Very regular.

Occurs in all settings, high quality to fast.

This started a few days ago 2-3 pages into printing a document.

The carriage cable connecting the print head to the engine board is probably at fault. Make sure it is properly connected at both ends. Also make sure the contacts connecting the printhead to the carriage are in place, clean, and not damaged.

Sounds like only half your printheads are firing.

Do the colors print ok? It's only black?

The black printhead is probably setup in two parts, each about half an inch in lenght. One of those arrays is not getting an electrical signal. I've seen this happen with the traces on the board the printheads are on got chipped and cut off from the printer. If you have a new head though the problem is in the ribbon cable, contacts in the carriage, or the engine board itself. Start with the contacts and the ribbon cable.

Could be a paper problem

For example if the printer is set up for standard paper and you use glossy paper the ink may blur in the middle of document, check your printer settings. Eventually see if the problem happens when you use your printer on a lower resolution settings.
If it is not a setting and media problem, it can be a traction problem.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Apr 11, 2008

It is the traction , it is a mechanical fault. If the printout does print empty lines at regular distance in the document, then is a problem with the traction, as the rollers are pulling paper not in synchrony with the printing job done by the heads.
The only simple maintenance you can try on this is cleaning the rollers with cleaning solution, but I do not think this will help.
Your printer mechanics need a partial dis-assemblage to discover were the problem is.
Also check if you have a setting called "prevent paper abrasion" in your printer properties (it is there only on some pixma model). If it is checked un check it, it diminish the roller traction force on paper.
If you decide to bring it to a service point out that it may be a traction problem of this kind, usually no replacement part is required for this kind of service, that therefore should not be too expensive.

My Ricoh Aficio CL2000N is printing several faint lines

Couple possibilities:
Fuser hot belt has wear lines transfering to the page
Black pcu needs to be replaced
Transfer unit is not being cleaned properly and needs to be replaced.
Remove each of these assy and inspect them for wear or lines that corespond to the lines on your prints.

Why does the printer use one black cartridge and not the other? Is there some way of instructing it to use the left hand one too?

the pixma printers use the large black tank in most modes like text and standard (default) or fast photo printing .. thats most economical when you are using just plain paper .... it will switch to the small black tank only if you select "High" quality mode .. that black matches the nature of the color inks much better and results in really good color pictures if you are using Gloss or Matt high quality photo paper .. you can select the quality level by the following ... when you start to print, a window comes up where you can select which printer you want ... at the right of this window is "preferences" .. click that .. now select the type of paper and "High" quality mode .... now the printer will slow down but will provide really nice results and it will use the small tank black ink instead of the large tank ....the small tank is only used for "high" quality photo prints which is only needed for high quality photo paper .. if you havent tried that yet you might want to get some glossy photo paper (either Canons or Costco has great stuff if you want a lot, like 150 sheets) but most glossy paper will work except colors might need tweeking for some ... print a nice photo in the high quality mode and you should be really impressed .. and you will be using your small black ink tank .. you might want to make the first few pictures small (2x3 inch) untill you are sure everything is the way you want it .. i usually print in the top left corner first .. then reinsert the same paper and try again right next to that .. i do that until i get the colors perfect .. then i print big .. 5x7 or even 8x10 on a new sheet... the high quality mode can be selected for just plain paper and it will use the special black ink but it doesnt result in a better picture .. so no point in doing that unless you want to experiment .. if you never print high quality photos then you will never use the small tank black ink .. it will still be used up eventually because of normal head cleaning the machine does automatically .. ...
grey scaling does not select the special ink unless you select "High" for the quality setting .. then yes you can print using that small tank black ..again it will buy you a lot if you are using High quality photo paper ... almost nothing for plain paper but at least it will allow you to use that ink .. ..

Black line is present when copying document; not

This sounds as if you have some ink/contamination on the small scaning glass that sits to either the left or right of the main glass on the copier.(Depending on the model/make)As your original is scanned over this thin piece of glass the scanning device will see any spots and this will result in a black line down the page. Please clean the glass with a soft rag.

Canon multipass mp 390 wont print black

FYI: This was Canon's reply to me (for my MPS 390) and it worked !
Dear Doug:
Thank you for contacting Canon product support. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you. We regret that black ink does not print from your MP390.
The issue may be with the print head. The print head holds the ink tanks.
You can print a Nozzle Check Pattern to confirm whether the inks are being correctly ejected from the print head nozzles and whether the print head is correctly aligned. Please follow these steps to do so:
1. On the MultiPASS control panel, press [Additional Functions].
2. Press '<' (left) or '>' (right) arrow to select [MAINTENANCE].
3. Press Set. [NOZZLE CHECK] will appear.
4. Press Set again and a Nozzle Check Pattern will print. If lines are broken or white lines are present, clean the print head nozzles.
Verify if the black grid pattern prints at the top. If not, then the nozzles may be clogged.
Please follow these steps to perform a Print Head Refreshing for the
MP390:
1. On the MultiPASS control panel, press Additional Functions. '1. FAX SETTINGS' will appear on the bottom row of the display.
2. Press '<' (left arrow) or '>' (right arrow) to select '3.
MAINTENANCE.'
3. Press Set. 'Nozzle Check' will appear.
4. Press '>' the right arrow to select '3. HEAD REFRESHING' and then press Set. The print head cleaning takes approximately 1 to 2 minutes to complete.
5. Perform a Nozzle Check Pattern.

4. Press '>' the right arrow to select '2. CLEANING' and then press Set. The print head cleaning takes approximately 30 seconds to complete.
5. Print a Nozzle Check Pattern to see if the print quality is improved.
6. Perform Head Refreshing if lines are still broken or white lines still appear. If nozzle check pattern is missing colors, replace the ink tank.
Once you have completed two deep cleanings, please perform another Nozzle Test. If colors are still missing, turn off the printer.
After 24 hours, turn the printer on and perform one more Deep Print Head Cleaning. Once the cleaning is complete, print another Nozzle Test.
After you have completed the Nozzle Test, please let us know the results.
This may be caused by the ink jets in the cartridge print head (the device that holds the ink tanks) wearing out or the ink nozzles starting to clog up. Remove and reseat the print head. Verify that ink has not built up on the bottom of the print head. Please follow the instructions below to reseat the print head:
1. Power the unit on.
2. Open the cover of the printer to bring the print head holder to the center.
3. Remove the ink tanks and set them on a protective covering, such as a rag.
4. Raise the locking lever to release the print head.
5. Remove the print head and reinstall it.
6. Lock the lever back down, gently.
7. Replace the ink tanks. Make sure they securely snap into place in the proper slots.
8. Lower the cover of the unit.
If you have performed multiple print head cleanings but the issue continues, it is most likely that the cartridge print head (the device that holds the ink tanks) will need to be replaced.

My Sharp Copier AR-5320 print black and white horizontal parallel lines on the documents.

Check for scratches on the drum surface. If you have ran a lot of copies on there, its a good time to get it serviced. It could be the cleaning blade on the drum as well.

Canon MP830 - extreme ink useage

According to a service manual for a similar Canon printer, the grayscale printing should only use the Pigment Black ink PGI-5BK.

On fast it is 300x300dpi with 1 pass, standard is 600x600dpi with 1 pass and high is 600x600 with 4 passes.

On plain paper in colour it is meant to still only use the C/M/Y and again the big pigment black ink PGI-5BK, it only uses the smaller black ink once you set it to use a photo type paper in the printing settings.
