Question about Sony Handycam DCR-DVD205 DVD Camcorder

1 Answer

I want to connect my DCR-DVD205 to my imac

I purchased a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD205 about a year ago. Since then I bought an iMac computer and I have been dying to edit my home videos with iMovie. My problem is that I can't seem to find the cable I need to connect the camera to the computer. I've even ordered one from the Sony website that I was assured was the right cable, but it's not. I'm getting really frustrated!!!! Can anyone tell me exactly what I need and where to find it?

Actually, with the iMac, there is no DVD tray. Discs are inserted into a vertical slot, and the computer pulls them in. I'm afraid to try to put the 3" disc in because I'm not sure what would happen. Would it get stuck?

FYI- Apparently, my husband (who will be sleeping on the couch tonight), already tried to put the 3" disc in the slot. It did, in fact, get stuck and he had to fish it out with tweezers. I was absolutely appalled to hear about such mistreatment of my "baby"! Lucky for him and our bank account, he didn't damage it.

As far as the plastic adaptor goes, I didn't even know there was such a thing! I'm going to buy one tomorrow and try. I'll let you know how it goes.

    Thanks uber-much for the suggestion!

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this a DVD camcoder, as in records directly to 3" DVD's?

If so, just put your mini DVD into the tray as you would a normal DVD. There is a smaller inner ring on the dvd tray made for 3" discs to sit in.

From there you can edit it directly from the DVD to the computer, and burn it back out onto a normal blank DVD.

Hope that all makes sense =)

I should add that you may need to finalise the disc in the camcorder before it will play in your computer.

Have a look at the user manual it should be fine. The arrms that guide them into the drive should also allow for 3" discs.

Failing that, pop down to your loacl shop that sells video cameras and you can buy a plastic adaptor that the 3" discs pop into to make them appear like a normal dvd =)

It's not that bad sleeping on the couch =) Until the kids get up in the middle of the night and cover you with honey etc as part of their growing experience.

The other option (if you can't locate the plastic ring) is to get an external DVD drive that just plugs into the USB port on the Apple. They are not that expensive these days, and it can be stored away when not needed.

How did you go with the plastic ring ?

If your having trouble locating one then click HERE.

This is listed on Amazon, but you can search the net for a place closer to you. Look for "3" dvd adaptor"

Not needed.
Connect your camera to the Mac with a four to six pin firewire cable and you will be able to capture.
Note: Some newew Macs have 800 firewire ports which use a nine pin cable.
