Question about Dell Inspiron 8200 Latitude C840 Laptop Keyboard03J247 CD-ROM Drive

My laptop screen keeps on switching on and off and on and off and on....

Hi,
I have a Dell inspiron 8200 laptop since 2001 ( I don t know the exact model type, so am not sure about the C840 thing below). It has 512 Ram and 40 Giga harddrive. Last november, the screen randomly started switching between on and off about every second. Sometimes it would just freeze completely.
The only solution is to switch the computer off.

I have tried various fixes and don t know what to do anymore:
in safe mode, I have never had any problems.
I have run the Dell diagnostics Cd (even the slow one) and that passed all the tests.
I thought it may be the batteries/ power related.
I have checked antiviruses with avira.
I even formatted and reinstalled everything, and updated the drivers. I thought that had fixed the problem, because after that it was only freezing some times, but was not having the screen on -off switch anymore.
But the switch on and off and on etc thing started again last night, and I now just don t know what to do anymore.

Do you have an idea what it could be?

Thanks and Regards,

John-Frederick

The problem your having appears to be with your video circuit. Depending on your model's options this would consist of 1) LDC panel display, 2) video card or on board video controller, 3) LCD ribbon cable. If your laptop has an external video adaptor port, connect it to an external monitor and see if the problem occurrs. If the problem happens on the external monitor then your laptop LCD display panel is probably OK. If this is the case, you'll need to diagnose the problem further or take it to a repair shop. The reason it seems to work in safe mode is that the video circuit is not being fully utilized, ie.. no wallpaper, screen saver, etc..

  • Hi, you can go into the "Control Panel" and make changes to the Power Saving Options, or Energy Saving. First from the "Start Menu" in the [Start Search] window, type: power, next scroll to find the "Short-cut' listing for {Power Options}, click on it to go to the next window. You'll be able to adjust the "Power Options," (Sleep, "Awake," or Hiberate, if available). "Let me know how things worked out for you by giving a "helpful rating"

Hmmm, Typically safe mode overcomes most errors, You can make changes in MS-Dos, but if all else fails and you fear data loss, daisy chain the hard disk to another computer with matching OS and move the important files then wipe and re-format

Dell Inspiron 1200 no POST

There are two memory slots on this model, but there is no "Onboard" memory. Without the memory that you removed, your laptop will not post. It sounds like a dead motherboard issue to me, especially since you have pretty much torn it down to barebones. Rarely, this can also be caused by the processor but it is less likely. Unfortunately, since you cannot keep it running, there isn't much chance of diagnostics. I hope this helped.

Setting up S video out on Dell Inspiron 8200

I do this all the time with my ATI powered laptops... Right click the desktop, select properties, choose settings then advanced. You should have 3 screens. Laptop, Monitor and TV (I only get 'multiple monitors' no matter what I try...) You must have it connected before it will allow you to 'activate it' Once its activated theres a place for you to click to make the s-video / tv output your DEFAULT... Keep in mind that with some media players (windows for example) the movie image will only appear on the default screen- the other screen will be blank. So if you are intending to record to your VCR make sure that your TV is the Default.
