Onboard means the sound card is incorporated with the motherboard.
An addon card is plugged into one of the expansion cards located on the motherboard. If you are looking at the back of the case you will see two or three narrow rectangular shaped slots towards the bottom of your case. If your speaker cable plugs into one of those slots then you have an expansion card, if not then you have onboard sound.
