Hi! try to check the settings on your 2wire modem, you can do this by going to gateway.2wire.net, run the system setup wizard, when you get to the ppp authentication page, check the username & password on it, it should be the one that you setup for your ISP account. as for the wireless on the desktop, it depends on the brand of the wireless adapter, be sure you have installed the drivers for this adapter. you may need to go to the client utility manager or the wireless adapter shortcut/icon on your computer screen then configure it to "see" the 2wire network. make sure wireless encryption is turned on in the 2wire modem's MDC, you can do this by going to homeportal/management, or go to gateway.2wire.net/mdc.

You will need to check your router settings and verify that the wireless settings are setup.

To access your router go to http://192.168.1.1

You may need to consult your routers website and check for configuration with the wireless part of it.

If you can get me the model of your router I can direct you further.

Let me know if you need any further help =)

No ethernet connection on my computer thats hooked up directly to the 2wire router. how do i acquire ethernet connection?

My guess is that the 2wire router has a DTE plug and a DCE plug. The DTE plug is meant to plug in to your DSL modem, while the other plugs are meant to plug into computers.
If you move the plug, it might work, assuming you have an upstream and downstream connection on the router.
Failing that:
Make sure the cable is an ethernet cable and not a phone cable,
Make sure the wires are run straight through. If it is a crossover cable, it might be meant to connect a DTE to a DTE without a hub, and it won't connect a computer to a router port.
Try a different cable.
Try a different computer (borrow one, etc.)

Connecting Laptop wireless and Desktop wired to the router

Do you need to see the desktop or just share folders from each other? If the latter then you need to do the following:

Use Windows Explorer and select a folder you want to share. Right click and select sharing and security.

On the sharing tab click on Share this folder. Enter a share name ( I like to enter the PC name _folder name; Rick1_Downloads)

Click on Permissions. If your ok with everyone using the PC's and Laptops having access then highlight Everyone and click on Full Control.

Do this on each PC and Laptop.

That should be it or darned near close.

run the telephone line from your modem into the wall jack. From the modem connect a network cable (cat5) into the back ( via the uplink port) of your linksys router . Your router can now route the IP from the modem.

Its almost impossible to connect a 2wire DSL router with a Cable modem. They dont go hand in hand.
Although you can connect the outgoing ethernet wire from the modem in the last ethernet plug on the back of the router and then have the ethernet connections coming from the router. But not wireless. and if you find a way, contact me at jneal2k9@hotmail.com
