Lift the scanner up, then you will see the carriage holder moving to left side. After that you will notice the cartridges are inserted with the carriage holder.

The cartridges are under the scanner and stay off to the right side of the unit except when printing or when you lift the scanner unit cover while the unit on. If the cartridges returns to the right, close the scanner unit cover and then reopen it. If the cartridge carrier doesn't move, make sure that the unit is turned on.
The black ink goes on the right side.
