Question about Acer AL1715 17" LCD Monitor

1 Answer

Acer AL1715b LCD monitor

Monitor image distorts badly (shimmering and pulling) when it has been turned on for a while. The time that it was on before it distorted was reducing each time it was turned on. It looks fine before it starts distorting. None of the electrolytics on the circuit board are swollen, or look at all distressed, but there is some corrosion around the soldered pins of the VGA socket on the circuit board. Here is a pic:.

Thanks for the prompt reply! Yes, I've built all sorts of electronic gizmos, but LCD monitors are new to me. This one is a gift from my son and has not been used much. This model has only one PC board with everything on it: power supply, signal processing and LCD panel drivers. It is part number: 790361200611. Thanks. Picture:

I have the same problem, the monitor starts to develop black lines and distorts badly. I tap it a few times on top and it clears up.

You obviously have some technical background which is going to help alot.
What I need to know is the part number from your video board firstly. I may have a schematic here for it, though there are about 5 types for this one model.
Secondly, since you appear to have electrical knowledge I will also assume you have a half decent multimeter.
With the unit powered on, (you will need to connect the video cable and have the pc running so it dosn't go into standby)measure the voltage on the connector between the powerboard and video card. In particular we need to check the +5v line to see if it is fluctuating even a small amount. This +5v powers the panel itself, so any fluctuations will cause inherent video problems.

If possible, could you also submit a photo of the entire video board, and another of the power board just for my reference.

Near the transformer there are 2 rectifiers. Check there are no shorts on either of those, particularly the one on the right in the photo.

Also check the caps in that area for any that have gone dry. That will cause the same issues of course as those that have exploded.

The closest schematic I have here is for an AL1717x but it's all schematic, no block diagrams or anything else I can use to compare it to the board you have.

send me a garbage email and I will email it over for you to go over if you'd like it.

You may want to open it up and inspect the caps (bad caps with bulging tops) as shown in my pictures here:

MY monitor is very distorted.

Try disconnecting and reconnecting the cables. Sometimes this is a cable connection issue.

Rich most likely this monitor needs capacitor replacement if you can solder you can do it, you just need to order or get the bad capacitors that need replacement so you need to open the case and get at the power board. once you can get at the blown caps you can see whats damaged and what is OK usually it is 1 or 2 capacitors at about 50 cents each. and about 1 hour of your time.
let me know what your doing, good luck

Acer AL2216WBD LCD Monitor Problem

If your computer does not have a video card that supports the correct resolutions for the widescreen monitors, then your picture may get stretched. Much like watching normal tv programs on a an hd set. It will eitther strech or cut off the picture.
Try different settings in you computer display settings.

ACER LCD monitor no image, appears white color only

Quickly go to the Acer website and check FAQ's and while there also find out how to get an RMA to return it. My guess is you have a bad monitor. At $200 roughly for a replacement I would hustle. I am assuming you got nothing but a white screen but did get video on your TV.
