Canon MP500 printer

We have a Canon MP500 printer (about 2yrs old) that prints a black strip (about .250" wide) on the back of each page. It use to be something that would happen just when we printed the first page after the printer sat for a while and then it went away. Now it is on all pages and does not go away.

Canon website tech support knowledge base describes this problem and recommends running the bottom plate cleaning procedure (pick maintenance from printer properties menu, bottom plate cleaning - software instructs you to put folded paper in printer and it runs it back and forth). This didn't really help my river of black ink, but if you problem isn't as severe, maybe it will help you. Worth a try.

We have the same problem. I removed the cartridges, then removed the print head. There was lots of ink gunk on the print head. I cleaned it and the problem disappeared completely for a few days but is now back. I suspect the print head needs to be replaced. Still working on it.

On back side of printed paper?

It means that you have an ink in paper path, i would ques on registration roller (long black roller which you can see when you open the printer cover).

When printing, a black stripe is printed on the back side of the printed pages (about 1/4'' wide, running from top to bottom). The ink strip bleeds through to obscure printed side. Any suggestions?

You need to have the exit rollers cleaned at a shop, and a mylar strip added to keep that from happening again. It's the ink from the cleaning station backing up thru the exit rollers.

Our Cannon MP 500 is leaving a 1/4" wide black streak on the back side of copies. I have cleaned off the cartridge heads, replaced the ink tanks cleaned the heads to no avail. What is the problem and how...

HI Foster,
The problem is not with the print head. Print a blank page and if you are still getting the streak. Something is probably trapped in the printer or the rollers are dirty.

My Canon Pixma MP500 is printing only black.

Hey, Sound like something is wrong with the color cartridge. Replace the color one and try again. If that fails you might have to replace the printer as it doesn't sound like the problem is software related.

Black ink

I called the local Canon printer repair facility, and a serviceman said that the black line is caused by too much ink in the ink absorber device below the paper path. He said to fix it requires disassembling part of the printer, replacing the absorber foam, installing a longer tip for the excess ink, and reassembling and testing the printer. I asked if this would be a permanent fix. He said no, that the problem could reoccur as the absorber foam would eventually fill up again.

Black line on back of page

It sounds like you have a black ink leak and it is smearing onto the paper when you print. I don't know any reasons for this except if you topped the black ink up yourself, and didn't re-block the hole you made. Then I guess the ink would gravity drip onto the paper tray while you weren't printing. Otherwise I would suggest changing the print head, but this might be expensive.
