Hard drive interface

I just ordered a 1tb hard drive with a "Serial ATA interface". Is that compatable with my Compaq Presario s3200nx (not on the product list) desk top motherboard? If not can I put it in my USB case?

If your computer is running kind of sluggish, you can fix it with an easy clean up of your registry. Here's a link to a free scan that works well:

I've used this one and it sped up my computer by quite a bit. Hopefully this helps.

Hi nortocd

(01) It will work in your USB hard disk enclosure if the enclosure supports SATA. If the enclosure supports the older style (ATA/EIDE) interface, then you'll just need to get an enclosure that supports SATA for your new hard disk. I like the Nextar external HDD (hard disk drive) enclosures.

You can find many external HDD enclosures made by various manufacturers these days. They're available for 3.5" (laptop-sized) and 5.25" (desktop PC-sized) HDDs supporting ATA/EIDE, SATA and SCSI HDDs and even Optical drives (DVD, etc.) Newegg is a great online source for computer & high tech-related equipment. They're prices are very competitive and their customer service is excellent. You can also find customer reviews of most of the products they sell, too, which can be very helpful.

(02) If you'd like this HDD to be portable, then I recommend you use an external HDD enclosure. They are available w/ USB and w/ eSATA connections (for connecting externally to your computer(s)). I don't recommend using IEEE1394 (firewire) as USB 2.0 is faster. eSATA is faster than USB 2.0 but is not a commonly available external connection on most computers yet.

(03) If a SATA port (connection) is not available inside your computer, you can install a SATA controller (if an expansion card slot is available in your computer) and connect your new HDD to the new controller.

(04) You can find information regarding your Compaq Presario HERE.

(05) I checked your motherboard specifications HERE. Your computer's original equipment does not support SATA. However, if you'd still like the HDD to be installed internally, just install a SATA controller and connect the new HDD to the SATA controller.

Yes, either of these drives will work. The cache is not all that important it is just where data is stored temporarily in case you have to access it again soon after a file is written to the hard drive. The best thing you could do in this case is see if your motherboard has a sata connection which I would assume it does and buy a sata hard drive. It will be much faster than either of those drives, just make sure you also get a sata power adapter if your power supply doesn't already have one and a sata cable.

There are two types of 2.5-inch disk-drives: those with the (older) "parallel-ATA" interface, and those with the (newer) "serial-ATA" interface.

The easiest way to determine what you have is to take the laptop with you to the computer-store; they can inspect your current disk-drive, and sell you a compatible replacement.

A "good" computer-store can "clone" your existing disk-drive onto the new disk-drive,
copying all the files (your files and the Windows files), and then you can restart and resume
normal operation.

Given the "vintage" of your computer, my guess is "parallel-ATA".

you need a Serial ATA hard drive, and you may have a limit to how big of a hard drive you can go to.
Go to your local computer supply store and tell them what you need,,and they will sell you a compatible unit.
As to what type of drives to buy,,,,there are many types of drives,,and many opinions,,get the highest spin rate is all i would suggest.
