Neutral safety switch is out of adjustment , sticking, or just flat worn out.
The switch works like the door light switches with a plunger that engages when you open the door.
A decent shop manual is the best way to get instruction and you can get one with pictures and instructions starting at about $20 at your local parts store or book store. Well worth the money.
Haynes or Chilton's are a few that are easy to get and simple, but don't go in for the big shop manual as they are expensive and confusing for the small job mechanic.

My 2000 Chevy silverado 1500 z71 wont move. used 4wd then tried to put back into 2wd it would shift into any gear. Put back in park it makes a grinding noise

Sounds like your transfer case in neutral. You have to engage the transfer case back into gear then shift selector to drive or reverse. When your transfer is in neutral the transmission will not operate. Good luck.

When i try to put it in park it takes it at times. i have to start it on neutral at times. it feels to smooth when i try to sift the gear.

Two possible causes could be a bad neutral safety switch (enables the vehicle to start in only Park or Neutral) or the transmission linkage may need adjusting. If you feel significant "play" in the gear shift (from what you described, it appears to have a lot of play) the linkage will need to be adjusted to get the gear shift to "lock in" to the individual gears instead of sliding.

Its sounds like the shift lever is loose at the trans, kick down lever at the same place might be your other issues. Left side of trans just above the pan is the location

My 2000 chevy s10 pickup doesn't want to shift

Check your master and slave, If your slave is not fully depressing the pressure plate it would be very hard to shift.

Low fluid would not cause this. However there is a bolt on the side of the trans that you remove and put your finger in to check the level. If you put your pinky in and no fluid comes out it is low.

The slave often goes on the chevy's. It is internal, you have to pull the trans to replace it.

Also a pressure plate that is collapsing can cause the same problem. You are pushing all the way down, but it is not releasing.
Hope this helps.
