The recorder keeps telling me there is no tape, when I am trying to record a TV program on to a correct dvd/r. When I press live signal I only get a large red dot in the upper left and a blue screen.

Is the VHS tape you are trying to record a commercial VHS tape (movie)? If so, it may have copy protection on it. The recorder is probably programmed to prevent you from making and using DVDs of commercial copy-protected VHS tapes.
OTR is one-touch recording on most of my VCR/DVD burners where you set the length of time to record from the tv. In my manual it is the Express Record feature. Press the REC button several times to advance the record time by 30 minutes. In your case it might refer to On Timed Record.
Use the COPY button on the front of the unit when the tape you want to record is in the VCR and a blank DVD is in the DVD tray. If you have the A/B Edits set, only the A/B editted sections will copy. (Copy protected tapes and DVDs can't be copied.) (Or the timed transfer described below)
Copying DVDs to VCR tapes can be done in a timed record mode. You can either use Menu > Disc > Copy Disc then press OK or Menu > Timers > Set Transfer and press OK. Then press Info to name the timed event followed by Done and OK, if desired. Press OK to highlight Copy From/To and make sure to select the correct source and destination and press OK. Next set the day and time that you want the transfer to take place (a couple of steps, press OK between them and when done). Then adjust the quality if needed and press OK. Finally highlight Keep Timer and press OK again. Make sure the correct tape and DVD are in place for the timed event.
Depending on what you set the unit for, I'd look for signs of power failures (which mess up most timed record functions). Then I'd double-check the time you set it to transfer and the A/B edits function. (A/B edits lets you grab small clips from an Indexed tape. Either index the tape by playing it and pressing the Insert A/B edit button (on the VCR/DVD, possibly on the remote) or delete A/B edits.)
Select AV-1 or some thing in TV and plug DVD recorder Video-Audio output in AV-1 input of TV, playback any DVD and confirm its picture and sound in TV. Press Stop button of DVD recorder to stop playback. Now plug Video-Audio output of VCR in DVD recorder input and select AV Input in DVD recorder, insert VHS tape in VCR and playback it and confirm you get VHS picture and sound in TV via DVD recorder. Hookup between TV, DVD recorder and VCR is completed. Playback VHS tape in VCR, Insert blank DVD disc in DVD recorder and press Record while you see VHS tape picture in TV. Hope this info will help you.
You indicated you have a DVD PLAYER, not DVD recorder. You cannot record on to a DVD on a player, you need to buy a DVD recorder/player. Unlike a VCR which stands for Video Cassett Recorder which can record and playback video. DVD recorder technolgy much more complicated.
I called the manufacturer and realized I was using the wrong type of recordable DVD disc to dub to. Non copy protected VHS tapes dub just fine as long as I'm using the proper disc.
The DVD AGG (automatic gain control) is somehow being fooled into thinking the non-commercial tape has macrovision (copy protection). Is this a relatively inexpensive machine?
If its a combined dvd/vcr unit you should be able to record on the dvd input from the vcr with a 3 split cord connected as described below..
VCR - --------- Video output - yellow. Audio output - left and right - red & white.
=========================================
DVD -------- Video input - yellow. Audio input - left and right - red & white.
========================================= Or you might have to use a standared RF cable from the
antenna out on the video to the antenna in on the DVD.
Just as you can't copy commercially made video tapes to another VCR due to Macrovision anti-copy encoding, the same applies to making copies to DVD. DVD recorders cannot bypass the anti-copy signal on commercial VHS tapes or DVDs. If a DVD recorder detects the anti-copy encoding on a commercial DVD it will not start the recording and display some sort of message either on screen or on its LED front panel display that it detects the anti-copy code or that it is detecting an unusable signal.
A DVD recorder can be used to copy any homemade videos, such as camcorder videos and videos made from TV shows, and can also copy Laserdiscs, and other non-copyprotected video material. Also, remember that a DVD recorder also has a built-tuner for recording TV programming directly. The tuner can be programmed to record a series of programs on different days and times, much like a VCR.
However, if you are recording a non-copy protected DVD to a DVD recorder you can record any of the video content, provided you click on the menu and start the video segments running and you have enough time space on the disc.
DVD recorders function like VCRs in that they can record incoming video signals -- however, they do not automatically copy all the contents of the DVD - for instance, you cannot copy the interactive menu functions of a non-copy protected commercial DVD. A DVD recorder creates its own menu functions, it will not duplicate the function menu from a another DVD.
the dvd recorder has to be set to monitor the program your watching! you can not copy vhs tapes to dvd this way because the tapes that are prerecorded have a copy protect feature and will nut copy right!
This suggests that you are net setting up the DVD recorder up correctly, Check- are you connecting to the correct 'INPUT; port? Check have you select the correct chanell that points to this port. Carefully go the the book- vey can be very dense to read.
cant get the tape out of the unit
