CD ROM Drive not reading.. a SINGLE THING!

I have a Gateway laptop and just this evening the CD ROM drive was acting funny.. I went to install some new software and was surprised to find that it wasn't reading the disk. So I tried it again. Then I tried to use the run option and that didn't work either. Also, when I go into My Computer, the D drive is in recovery. So, I thought that may be the root of the problem. I guess my question is... WHAT DO I DO? Thanks in advance for your feedback!
