Question about Whirlpool GSX9885J Top Load Washer

Not draining the tub

I have a GSX9885JQ0. We've had it for about 4-5 years now. Never had a problem until now. The machine beeped (as when done with the load) My wife went to put those clothes in the dryer, but the tub was still full of soapy water. She put it in the rinse cycle to rinse the clothes and the motor runs, the tub spins, but the pump is not draining the water. I hear a clicking sound when the motor is running too.

A little bit of helpful information I got late in the game: My wife told me she could smell "something burning" so she shut off and un plugged the washing machine. After running some errands she plugged it back in, and continued washing another load. Same result on the second load without the "something burning". The machine got to the rinse cycle and after the clicking sounds turned it's self off.

I have added some symptoms to my washer problem...

  • jtarms45 Apr 12, 2008

Do you think it's the lid switch if the machine is spinning, just not pumping out any water. I can hear and feel the tub spinning, and hear a motor running (along with something trying to switch from the clicking I hear) It just isn't pumping any water out.

  • jtarms45 Apr 12, 2008

I don't know if the lid switch is the problem. The machine still spins, only when the lid is closed, like the switch still works...

  • jtarms45 Apr 12, 2008

OK. I haven't taken the machine apart yet. Is there anything special I need to check for on the motor, I mean any switched need to be tripped or is there a sequence or series of checks with the volt meter?

The start stop start stop is caused by the motor trying to come out of the start winding into the run winding and can not your need to find out if the main motor has 120 volts fgoing to the run winding if it has then the motor need sto be replaced

Try to perform the following test as describe on this link. If the machine works, you might have a defective lid switch.
Check here for more info on the lid switch and other possible failures.

The pump which drains the water sounds to be faulty and may need repaired/replaced. also check to see if there is a clog in the drainage hole.

Hi,

To my knowledge, most problems such as one you have can be caused by three (3) possibilities:
1. electronic - the activating circuitry that engages the drain valve is faulty;
2. electrical - the drain valve is not opening evening if electronically activated; and
3. mechanical - the drain valve is stuck or the most likely, the drain passageway is clogged.

The last would be your best option and possibly the easiest to correct.

To recap, you hear a clicking sound means that the drain valve opens, you hear the motor, means the drain motor is running, but no water drains out, that only leaves a clogged system.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

    Additional information.

I was made to understand that your particular unit uses a single motor as the spin motor and the drain motor. The Whirlpool GSX9885JQ0 also uses a feature wherein water is sprayed back into the tun during the spin cycle. This is accomplished by the spin motor doing double duty as motor for the drain pump. The drain pump goes into a Y splitter. The Y splitter is actually a two-way valve. During the normal spin cycle, the valve towards the spray back (to the tub) is open whilst the one towards the drain is closed. On rinse/drain, the other holds true, the spray back is closed but the valve for the drain opens up.

I would then suspect that the valve assembly is clogged/blocked. Either that or the valve is defective (unlikely) as most internal parts of this brand are very reliable.

    Cheers.

    Hi again,

Your initial post "...but the pump is not draining the water..." and your subsequent post "...smell something burning..." could most probably point to the windings of a solenoid or a small stepmotor. The Y splitter previously described is a two-way valve which could be activated either by a solenoid or a stepmotor.

Have you checked the Y splitter (2-way valve)?

Hello & Welcome to FixYa

FL error indicates flood condition and is caused due to any overfill condition that occurs inside the washer. To clear the display you can press and hold the STOP/CANCEL button. Usually this error is caused when overfill switch trips due to excessive water in the tub. You can also try to clean the drain hose and check the water inlet valve. Please get back to me if you have any other questions.

Top load washer about 8 years old- Problem 1 = during the finial rinse/spin the tub will not fulling drain and leaves clothes very wet...had a service call replaced the pump, however stills does not drain...

most likely its the electronic board, easy to change. if you can use a second hand one out of a known working machine- see how that goes- it will probably cure the noise problem

After the clothes have spun dry, a small amount of water accumlates in the tub; generally 1/4 inch or so. Why BTW, I'm not sure that I've selected the correct model. Our washer is about 3 years old.

If draining into laundry tub, chances are water is siphoned back into washer due to laundry tub slow drain.
Very long drain hoses( such as 10+ feet) will also cause this.

Water keeps running into machine when it is done but not into the tub but no water leaking on floor so must be going right out of the drain

water can't run out of drain until the drain pump runs. must be water level continuously rising, but slowly. definitely water solenoid switch problem. pl. open and clean if u can or replace.

Oasis washer displays code Ld and wont fully drain

LD means long drain. Check to see if there is something clogging your drain hose. If not remove the drain pump from the bottom of the washer tub and clean it out. Also clean the recirculating pump. That should fix it. if not replace the drain pump.
