Hi,

Every time I turn on my SX100 IS the Set Date/Time screen appears. Looks like the date battery is dead. I want to replace it with a new one, but am having the hardest time trying to get the battery out. Any suggestions?

hi i have the same problem with setting time and date ... it wants to be set everytime i turn on the camera... what is the problem?? can you please help me???? changin the cr 1220 is not helping...

Same problem here - SX100 does not save date/time on power off and has to be reset every time. Changing the CR1220 battery doesn't help. Response from Canon Support:

Make sure the battery is installed correctly (page 191-192 of
instruction manual). If you are still having trouble with setting the
date/time your camera will require service. So if replacing the CR1220 doesn't help it appears you will have to send it back to Canon for service (should be covered by warranty if less than a year old).

SOLVED!!
I had the same problem. Checked the battery...3V..good.
If you remove the screws holding the top bezel (on/off switch bezel - 2 screws on top back, 2 screws under the flash). Carefully lift the top bezel off. Remove the side piece where bateery is (2 screws - 1 on bottom and actual baterry cover screw). remove battery. Now remove screw holding the speaker in place. pull the speaker up and to the side. There are 2 sets of gray/black wires. Obviously one is for the speaker, the other is for the battery. I noticed on mine that the black wire from the battery was severed in half. Soldered back together and voila! it works again...no more enetering the time/date every time I turn on the camera. Be careful as you reassemble the bezel. You will notice that Canon did not leave a lot of room and used very thin wires. You should be good now!!!

This a pretty new model, the battery shouldn抰 die so quickly. Before going buy a new battery, check the old battery first. Refer owner manual page 191-192, take out the battery holder, if you have a volt meter, check the voltage should be around 3V. If you don抰 have a meter, just clean the battery with a dry soft cloth, and reach a small screwdriver inside the battery slot to bend the reeds a little bit(before doing this remove all the batteries,) carefully, don抰 break the reeds. The put bask the battery and set the time. If it won抰 solve the problem, now change the battery or ask for service.

The date and time is asked whenever the camera is switched on

Have you set the date and time? If so then your camera's date battery is probably dead and needs to be replaced. First get yourself a CR1220 battery, most often found at your local Radio Shack or online at amazon. Then open the camera's terminal cover (where your USB is) and using your fingernail. Open the battery holder, remove the old battery, and replace with the new one. Reinsert the holder with new battery in your camera and turn on your unit. set the date and time and you should be all set. For further information see your instruction manual or download from Canon at:

The instructions for changing the date battery start on page 137.

Hope this helps!

I have to reset date time etc everytime i turn camera on

If the Date/Time menu appears when the camera power is turned on, the date battery charge is low and the date and time settings have been lost. Please purchase a lithium coin battery (CR1220) and replace it as follows.

1. Confirm that the camera power is turned off.
2. Slide the memory card slot / battery cover lock and open the cover.
3. Hook your nail onto the date battery holder and lightly pull up.
4. Remove the battery holder in the direction indicated by the arrow. a570isbackupbatremove.gif 5. Remove the battery by pulling it up in the direction indicated by the arrow.

My wife is complaining that every time she turns off/on the camera she has to reset the data/time. I understand that when the batteries are changed the settings may be lost, but not simply when the camera...

Sounds to me that there may be another battery inside the camera that is going bad.

Issue: Everytime I power on the camera the Date / Time needs to be set.
Solution: Replacing the Date Battery for the PowerShot A480.

Replacing the Date Battery. If the Date/Time menu appears when the camera power is turned on, the date battery charge is low and the date and time settings have been lost. Please purchase a lithium coin battery (CR1220) and replace it as follows.
Please note that the first date battery may appear to expire relatively quickly after you purchase the camera. This is because it is installed in the camera at the point of manufacture, not when you make the purchase. caution.gifBe particularly careful to keep the date batteries out of the reach of children. Seek medical assistance immediately if a child swallows a battery since corrosive battery fluids can damage the stomach or intestinal walls. 1. Confirm that the camera power is turned off.
2. Open up the battery door / cover and remove the AA Batteries.
3. Remove the date/time battery holder.
4. Grasp the battery and slide it in the direction of the arrow.
a480backupbatt.jpg 5. Insert a new battery with the (+) side facing up.
6. Replace the battery holder and battery cover.
7. When the Date/Time menu appears set the date and time.
note.gif After purchasing the camera and turning on the power for the first time, although the Date/Time menu will appear, you do not need to replace the date battery. If you ever dispose of your camera, first remove the date battery for recycling according to the recycling system of your area.

Every time I turn on my Canon A540 Powershot I get the black date/time screen. The date/time is all zero (the photo properties default to 1 Jan 1980) and I have to either enter the date/time or press...

Inside the battery compartment, right beside the AA batteries, there's a tiny little door labeled CR1220 (see this picture). Pry the door open with your fingernail, remove the little button battery located there, and take this battery down to your local drugstore to buy a replacement camera clock battery. Remember, it's a "CR1220" battery. It should cost only about $4.

Need to reset time and date every time I turn on camera.

The backup battery needs to be replaced. This small button battery (CR1220) provides the power for your camera to 'remember' settings when you change or remove the AA batteries. Instructions for changing this battery are in the manual on page 191 (US version of manual).
You can view/download the manual here.

Date/TIme Screen ALWAYS appears when camera turned on.

You need to replace the lithium date/time battery. It is a CR1220 coin cell and it's replacement can be done using the instructions on page 109 of the advanced guide. If you don't have a copy you can get one here:

Why does the date and time setting screen appear when I turn on the camera?

Turning on the camera while the date and time are not set or after the date and time settings have been cleared due to a total cut off of power (which occurs when batteries are dead and the camera is not being supplied power via AC adaptor) causes the date and time setting screen to appear on the monitor screen. When this happens, be sure to set the correct date and time before doing anything else.
