Iphone doesn't connect to computer

i have an unlocked iphone firmware 1.1.4 and it won't connect to the computer when i plug it in. it just makes these three low beeps. it chargers just fine, but i really want to add music to it. i don't want to put it in recovery mode unless i have to, because if that doesn't work than I can't get it out of recovery mode and i'm stuck with a worthless broken iphone since apple won't take it with 3rd party apps on it. if there's anything i can do with winsp and openssh i'm good with that and was hoping i could find a solution doing that, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
