You will want to check the device manager to see if the drivers are not working properly.
Go to start then right click on my computer and go to properties
On the left side of the properties window you will see device manager click on that and find the dvd/cd-rom drives
click on the plus icon to the left of that and it will show you the drives right click and select update driver and then select search automatically for updated drivers.
It is hard to find out what is wrong with out seeing the computer but try these links....

not helpful but thanks. i have had two previous episodes with this and when i called dell they fixed it both times by remote control. he mentioned last time that with lack of use it sometimes goes back or defaults to the problem. some setting in the program is what they said. still need help.
