If the drive is set as Cable Select you are allowing the motherboard to detect where it is on the ribbon cable. If the drive is shown as Primary slave then the drive is on the wrong connector on the ribbon cable. If it is shown as secondary master than the IDE cables on the board need to be switched (primary to secondary, secondary to primary)

there is no diffrence between primary & third ide hdd ,if you install nay booteble hdd in master so system try to from that frist .

Make sure your IDE hard disk drive is connected to IDE1 port and that the data cable is fully connected. Also check the jumper on the IDE drive. If you are using only one IDE hard disk drive set the jumper on the drive as a Master without a slave. If you are running two IDE hard disk drives set the primary drive's jumper as a Master with a slave. Set your second IDE disk drive's jumper as a slave. The master drive should be connected at the end of the data cable and the slave drive should be connected to the next data connector. Than check your bios settings. Power on the system and press the Delete key every 2 seconds until the bios menu loads. See page 3-1 in your manual. Adobe reader is a free download; http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/ Once you’re in the bios go to page 3-4, Standard CMOS Features. Follow the instruction listed for IDE HDD Auto-Detection. Your HDD should be listed here. Than see page 3-7 in the manual. Open Advanced BIOS Features. A normal boot menu for the Abit would read; First boot device Floppy disk drive (If one is connected). 2nd boot device should be (CD-ROM/DVD-ROM). Third boot device should list your primary hard disk drive's (Model number). Load your windows CD into your CD-ROM drive. Once the settings above are set, press the F10 key to save your changes and exit the bios. Your system will auto restart. Windows should begin to load.
Once you reset the bios everything goes to manufactures default settings. You will need to make some changes within the bios. You'll need the help of the manual. See page 3-20. If your operating system is loaded on to the ATA IDE drive make sure you set bios settings as follows: Connect the ATA IDE to MB primary master IDE port. Connect the ATA SATA drive to the MB's first SATA port. ATA Configuration Set as, [P-ATA+S-ATA] S-ATA Keep [Enabled] Set to [Yes] This enables the SATA controller. P-ATA Keep [Enabled] Set to [Yes] This enables the IDE controller. On-chip IDE configuration, "ATA Configuration = [P-ATA+S-ATA]". Next go to Boot menu. Make sure the ATA IDE drive is chosen as boot device three. First boot device [Floppy] (If you have a floppy disk drive connected.) Second boot device would be [DVD/CD-ROM] drive. This should be connected to the MB's secondary IDE port & the DVD/CD-ROM drives Master/Slave jumper, set to Master. Third boot device [ATA IDE drive] If your boot drive is the SATA drive than set: third boot device to the SATA drive. (Hard disk drive with operating system loaded on it). Save your changes & exit the bios. Keep in mind all ATA SATA drives are seen as Master drives. SATA drives are seen by the SATA controller & in order by their connection to the SATA port number. Save & exit the bios. The system will auto restart. Windows should start.
Start by simplifying the configuration. Disconnect the second IDE cable from the motherboard and disconnect the power to the DVD drive. Disconnect the SATA device. On the #1 IDE cable, connect the master drive to the connection on the end of the cable. Connect the Slave drive to the middle connection on the cable. Start the computer and press the key indicated to enter setup. Verify that drives are properly indentified as master and slave. If they are, shutdown the computer. Now add the IDE DVD drive to the end connection on IDE cable #2. It should be set as a Master drive. Start the PC again and go into setupand verify that the DVD is IDE #2 Master. Shut down the PC. Add the SATA device and start eh PC again. Go into Setup to verify that all of the drives are properly identifed. Restart the computer and let it boot into Windows. Open Windows Explorer to view the drive settings. If the drives are all present, but the letters are not what you want, click on START and then right click on MY COMPUTER and then left click on MANAGE. Under Storage click on DISK MANAGEMEN. The drives will all be displayed with their assisgned letters. If you need to change a drive letter, right click on the drive you want to change and select 'Change drive letter . . .'. Change it to a hight letter in the alphabet, then change the dive you want in the original postion to the now vacant letter. Finally change the original drive to the first available letter. Example: C:=IDE M1 D: E:=IDE S1 Change D: to H: then E: to D: and finally H: to E: they drives would then be: C:=IDE M1 D:=IDE S1 E:=IDE M2(DVD). Restart the PC and the drive should come up as you want them to be labled.

My first thought is the cables have been moved or the drives moved. Maybe the jumper has fallen off the back of the drive (highly unlikely, but possible) or maybe a cable has come loose. It can't hurt to reseat all the cables and check the jumpers to see that all are correctly jumpered as master and slave.

Hi emceedrive, I gather you are using ATA/PATA IDE hard disk drives? Each hard disk drive has a large white sticker on it. Listed there are pin settings to set the IDE to Master or slave & Master with a slave. (We want to leave you're drive with windows on it alone). Not changing its jumper or not adding a jumper for now. We are not hooking up you're second drive just yet either. Oh, please you're not an idiot either. Unplug the power cable from the PC & open you're case. Please open you're ASUS P4P800 SE manual to section 2.2.3 Motherboard layout. We want to connect the data cable to SEC_IDE1 first because once PRI_IDE1 is connected you will not be able to connect SEC_IDE1's data cable up to the DVD drive bay. So grab a data cable for you DVD drive. It may have three connectors on it. Plug the connector that is the furthest from the other 2 connectors on the cable into the motherboard slot named SEC_IDE2. The data cable only goes in one way. Run the remainder of the cable up to the DVD player but do not connect it to the player yet. It is ok to fold the data cable which will help in routing it upwards to the DVD bay. Than connect the data cable to you're primary master IDE drive. (The one with windows already installed on it). The data cable should look just like the DVD data cable. Again you want to connect the furthest connector on the data cable into the MB slot named PRI_IDE1. For now it’s best not to install the drive into the drive bay. Stand it up next to your case or lay it down flat with a sheet of paper under it. Connect the power cable to the drive. Plug in the PC's power cord & power up the PC & start pressing the delete key every two seconds until the bios main menu loads. You should see the Primary Hard disk drive listed at the main menu. Now go to the title Boot in the bios. Open boot order. The boot order of the devices should be as follows. Boot device 1. (Floppy Disk Drive) Boot device 2. (DVD Disk Drive) [None shown it’s not connected to the system]. Boot device 3. (Model number of your Primary IDE Master HDD). Once this is set, save the bios & exit. The system should auto restart & windows should load. Let windows finish loading. Than shut down windows normally. Unplug the PC's power cord. Since you had to remove a DVD drive you'll need to set the remaining DVD player's jumper on the drive to a Master & connect the data cable & power cord to it. (You may have to remove the DVD to see where the Master pins are located. It will be marked on the DVD player near the pins). Now take you're new drive, do not insert it into the drive bay. Look at you're Master drive's white label. Set the jumper on the master drive first. It should be set as a Master drive with a slave. Connect a jumper for this. Go to you're new drive. Again look at its white label. Set this drive's jumper as a Slave drive. The Master drive should be connected to the end of the data cable. The new slave drive should be connected to the next in line connector. Once all data cables & power cables are connected plug in the PC's power cord & boot the system, again pressing the delete key every two seconds until the boot main menu loads. Now you should see the Primary IDE Master drive & you're new Primary IDE Slave drive listed. You should also see the DVD as the Secondary IDE Master. Go to the title "Boot" again. Set the boot order as mentioned above. Save & exit the bios. Windows should load as it did before. Once windows has finished loading open windows Explorer & see if you're new slave drive is listed. Shut down the system & unplug the power cord. Unplug the slave drive & mount it into its drive bay. Take a black marker & mark the side of the drive as slave. Disconnect the Master drive & connect it into its drive bay. Reconnect the data cables & power cables. Check all connectors before closing the case up. Re-connect the PC's power cord & boot the system. Everything should be fine. If you have a problem getting the data cable connected to the slave drive because its closer to the DVD drive as opposed to the Primary IDE Master drive you can make the slave drive a Secondary IDE Master (Change its jumper setting according to the drive’s label for Master with a slave) & connect the DVD player as a Secondary IDE Slave. (Change its jumper to slave). Change the Primary IDE Master drive’s jumper as a Master with no slave, single drive. That all.

Hi Banyar, lets check the main menu & the boot order in you're bios. Start up the PC, as soon as you see any display on the monitor press the delete key every 2 seconds until the bios main menu loads. This is also where you can see the time & date. List on the left is; Primary IDE Master Primary IDE Slave Secondary IDE Master Secondary IDE Slave Across from these on the right is the matching device. If you have one hard drive the bios will show its model number on the right. Ex: ST150322A. (You're drive will be different). If you have more than one hard drive the second drive, (Should be listed as Primary IDE Slave). CD-ROM drives would be listed as, Secondary IDE Master & Secondary IDE Slave. Write down the model name of the Primary IDE Master on paper. Now go to the title, "Boot" in the bios. Use you're manual & go to page 2-25. High-light, Boot Device Priority & press enter. Set the order as shown in the manual. Make sure the 3rd boot device is set to the correct hard drive listed from the main menu. The model you wrote down. Once set save & exit the bios. The PC will restart. You should no longer receive the error message & windows should boot normally. If windows does not load normally than it is possible that the Primary IDE master drive is not the drive with windows installed on it. You must find the correct drive with windows loaded on it. Connect that drive to the Primary IDE master port. You may need to reset the drive’s pin settings so it is seen as the primary drive. Than change the 3rd device in the bios boot priority list with the correct drive. Windows demands that the operating system be located on the, Primary IDE master port. Please read pages 2-12 & the top of 2-13 in you're manual.
I have come across this before, and I think its to do with the arrangement of the jumpers on the back of the hard drive. It usually gives a picture on the top panel of the hard drive to show you what way the jumper(s) have to be arranged to make your drive work on the Primary channel. This shouldn't really cause for much concern if your PC boots up from the third primary master, however if you have other harddrives you may have a cause of concern. Hope this helps.
