Acer does not post drivers according to the model number found on the tag on the rear of the scanner. You must examine the label on the top lid of the scanner and use that model number (eg: 640p, 610P, etc.) to locate the correct driver.
Acer stop supporting the Aspire 4738 Series for Windows XP. They currently only support and host the drivers for Windows 7.
However, I was able to find a copy of the older Windows XP drivers for your laptop, which are located here: Click Here.

Check and make sure that you are installing the most up to date printer driver for your printer. That error message can come up if some or all of the INF files are meant for older versions of Windows. Go to the HP website and download their most up to date driver files.
You are asking if you can use any windows CD installer ? if you are using an older version of windows in windows xp, i would say that would e fine if these CDs contents are compatible wth windows xp, but drivers and utilities used for older windows versions can not be used for windows xp installations, also, windows vista installations cannot be used windows xp which is an older windows version
