My scanner worked great for awhile. But, since, I have moved, the scanner will do two things. With all things I scan, a white strip will appear in the scan---like there is something blocking the scanner in that area. The other thing that occurs is with pictures----it does not scan them right - it just looks like a black square with a white line through it. Does anybody know what I can do to fix this problem?

That's all I got was a black strip. My solution was to get a new Neat Receipts mobile scanner. It works great and I didn't have to make any software changes. It was worth the price for a new one compared to all the hassles I had with the old one.
you might have a bad scanner assembly you might have dirt on the glass you may also have dirt on the white strip that is taped to the top of frame which the scanner uses to calibrate. if you took the top cover off and flip it you will see the strip, cleaning can solve the problem. you will need a lint free cloth. be careful, when you take the cover off, dust can quickly get on the glass.
Had the same problem as you but was able to fix it. I basically plugged it in and out while switching the lock switch until it worked. Here is my theory: The scanner strip got stuck further into the glass instead of tucked in behind the plastic, and i couldn't use the block switch (it was stuck) When you plug the scanner in it moved a little, i would then be able to lock the switch. I finally locked it into the position the furthest back, then unplugged it turned the switch to unlock and plugged it in, it worked.
Open the top Auto Doc Feeder. (The area where you insert the original to copy) It lifts up when pulled up gently but firmly. You will see a strip of glass. Clean the glass strip with Windex or alcohol on a paper towel or rag. Put the cleaner on the rag, not sprayed on the machine so it doesn't get on unwanted areas. Carefully examine the glass as you have smudges of ball point pen or white-out on the glass.
It appears as a line because the paper is moving past the fixed scanner and it can scan through whatever you have on the glass.
There is a spot on the thin strip of glass that sits next to the large scanner glass. Because you are moving the paper when using the feeder, a spot appears as a line. Shining a flashlight on the glass can help you locate it. You can scrape it off with a finger nail or clean it with a damp cloth.
Check the lock switch and make sure it is unlocked. I think the lock switch is on the bottom...or it may be under the lid near one of the hinges. Flip it back and forth and leave it in the unlocked position.
If this doesn't work, then it will most likely need service. Contact Canon Tech Support.
If you get a "Scanner failure" message then the problem is the motor itself. Notice how the motor works fine when the scanner is moving slowly, like copies or faxing with the original laid on the glass. HOWEVER, the scanner failure comes up when you use the automatic document feeder on top. Why? Because the scanner assembly has to move to the other side of the printer at high speed to get into position, and it's the high speed movement that triggers the error on the printer. The motor is expensive, part number Q3450-60003. Many other models use the same motor, maybe you could find one cheap somewhere and swap the motor?
