Maytag Gemini mgr6775 Lower oven takes FOREVER to preheat, but even when it says it is at 350, an independent oven thermometer says 310. It takes so long to bake anything.

  • Anonymous Jun 07, 2010

I have checked the oven with my other themometer before, and it has been close. This is a new problem. Also the fact that things are taking significantly longer to bake and the results are not the same tells me the oven is not working properly. I have read and re-read the owner's manual, and have not found a solution there. I would like to order the part and fix it myself if possible.

Maybe you should have the lower oven cleaned including the gas caps, it may be tideous but worth it. first is to locate the burners, it may be dirty or clogged so the heating procedure is delay and often times consuming.

here i provided you with the manual and go to page 11 to go straight to the cleaning procedure.

Hi, you have a problem with your heating element which is gradually fading off, that's why it takes a long time to heat up and as time goes on the heating element will stop working. You have to replace the heating element ASAP...

Take care

    I have a GAS oven.

Hi, this is a common problem that happens when the oven gas control valve
is sticking. This can be caused by a weak hot surface igniter or a
defective gas control valve. One thing that you can try(be very careful
doing this) is to give the gas control valve a light tap with something
hard like a wrench when the oven is turned on,igniter is glowing but
the burner is not on. You will need to remove the broiler/storage
drawer at the bottom of the oven. Once you pull the drawer out you
should see the gas control valve at the back of the range. Try turning
on the oven and lightly tapping the valve housing. This may loosen up
any debris inside the control valve housing that might be causing the
problem. If the oven burner comes on then try completely turning the
oven on and back of several times. And when I say completely I mean
turn it on after the igniter is not glowing and burner has shut off.
This works about 30% of the time. If the burner control valve stick
after trying this procedure then it could be the control valve and/or
the hot surface igniter defective. The hot surface igniter would need
to be disconnected from it's harness and tested with an OHM meter. Most
igniters should have a 500 to 700 OHM reading. If you get a reading
that is way off then the igniter is defective and replace it. If the
igniter tests good then the gas control valve is suspect and replace
it. Most appliance parts retailers will test your igniter for free.
When the igniter is on it should glow very brightly. If it is dim then
that is a sure sign it is bad.

    Take care

Dear Scrapyourhea,
First ensure that your independent thermometer is working fine. It seems that there is problem with your heat mechanism. Normally this type of problems requires servicing....
Download the manual from given link and go through it. This will tell you the cause for the same.

Oven does not get to temp when it says its preheated

More than likely, its your oven thermometer thats taking a half hour to read correctly. The oven is probably getting there sooner. If you had a digital thermometer, the read would come quicker. So save your money, nothing wrong with your stove.

Preheat takes forever

click the link  Oven temp sensors sense the temperature is the oven cavity and the temp sensor changes resistance, this change in ohm resistance tells the oven control what temperature the oven cavity at and tells the control to shut off the element or turn it back on. The most common temp sensors used today ( *not all ) are approx 1000-1100 ohm resistance at room temperature ( 70F )
Some ohm readings and there temperature:
Degrees F    -   Resistance
            100 - 1143 ohms
             200 - 1350 ohms
             300 - 1553 ohms
             350 - 1654 ohms
             400 - 1753 ohms

Oven will not achieve setpoint temperature.

You may not need anything. Most people test their oven with a dial type oven thermometer. They are slow to react and often not very accurate. When I test an oven or install a new thermostat, I use a digital thermometer with a remote temperature probe, hanging from the center of the oven, which shows the temp in tenths of a degree. I let the oven cycle on and off at least three times, then take the high and lower readings on the next cycle and average that out to see what the actual oven temp is. Most of the time, if there is a dial type thermometer in the oven it is very slow to react. After 3 to 5 cycles, they often show close to what the actual oven temp is, but the only way to know for sure is to use the more accurate digital thermometer. Most ranges with digital displays can be adjusted + or - about 35 degrees. Check your users manual for this info, but don't mess with it until you have checked the oven with a digital thermometer! Please don't bother rating this solution, as anything but a Fix-Ya drops my score. Thanks.
