Between that processor and the maximum RAM that laptop will take I'm not sure Windows 7 is a really good idea. The consensus seems to be 2 gigs of memory for Windows 7, this will go to 1.2 gigs at max (according to this page).

You could try Windows 7 "starter edition" if you really wanted 7 or there's always that up-and-comer OS Ubuntu, which has a "netbook edition"
(wikipedia has more information if you're interested).

Having said that if you can try it without spending several hundred dollars to see what the performance is like I would say upgrade the memory and try it out to see if the performance is something you can live with. It takes DDR PC2700 SO-DIMM type memory (specs page).

Well about guaranteed your 2 gigs ram is probably DDR II ram which has maximum of four gigs with 64 bit processing and 2 with 32 bit is. So motherboard needs upgrade. 35.00 for good giabit or board with 1000 megs a sec ethernet lan. With ddrIII ram. And upgrade operating system I believe win 8 has max 16 gig ram win 7 uses 8 gis vista and longhorn 64 use 4 and xp normal edition 32 bit uses 2 max. So you about have to run win 7 or 8. Win 7 will become direct x incomparable at some point making us change to win 8. Win8 cost like 300 to 350 and tiger has good deal of the win 7 pro media center for 75 bucks. So spend 150 on good speed 8 gig ram, 125 bucks for 12 core and at 4 GHz I think. And a board for 35. Reuse all other componets. And you\'ll have a 2500 dollar computer and best on the block. 1 GB increase

not every motherboard or on board video is compatible with windows 8

what windows was it running previously

windows 8 was designed for 64 bit platforms which requires 4 gig of ram but you have to also take into account the other hardware components and there maximum configuration

i have run win 8 on 2 gig of ram but it struggles with you tube downloads

i upgraded the ram to 4 gig and run win xp win 7 and win 8.1 on the hard drive

Converting from xp to windows 7

You can, but thorough backup of all your XP stuff is needed first, as you will lose much of it. Here is the detailed MS guide

Unless you have a genuine copy of W7 already, I'd recommend going to W8.1 , as it has now stabilised and will be supported for much longer than W7. However your hardware would need to be good enough. From XP there is no automated way to check this, instead

How come my laptop runs slower after I upgraded RAM?

One trick I always use is going to start>run>type msconfig> startup menu. remove as much as possible here of items you don't need to run at startup. this will speed your machine up.

Need to upgrade software from windows 95 to windows 7

How old is the computer to be running Win 95 !?!?! This is 16 years out of date !!I would be surprised if the specs are up to the job.

This is not just an upgrade, it is a whole new world.

What do you currently have......Processor, RAM, HDD size and all the other parameters required you begin to glaze over or are you vaguely with me ??

Buy a laptop that comes with Win 7 pre-installed is my advice.

I have a ACEer 5315 model no ICL50 running Windows Vista. To say Vista is **** is an understatement. I want to switch to Windows 7 but guess I will need a lot more RAM for this. Can I upgrade Ram on this...

I recommend that you switch to Windows 7 without upgrading your RAM. Windows 7 is a lot faster, better and uses less RAM than Vista. Recommended RAM for running Windows 7 is 1GB but I have installed them on a Centrino 1.5GHz with 768Mb of RAM and they run perfectly.
So make the upgrade to Windows 7 anyway and if you feel that you need more power then you can get more RAM.
Also, download Windows 7 upgrade advisor to check if your pc is compatible. Download upgrade advisor here.

My audio is terrible when i upgraded to windows 7!! can anyone help

Check the Sony website for any and all available windows 7 drivers for your machine. Start with the chipset drivers, then video, sounf etc. Sound will be crappy if you don't install the chipset drivers first.

Thanks in advance for helping me to resolve this win 7 driver issue, I added 4GB from Fry's electronics cheap $25 and upgrad my daughter's Sony VGN-FE890N to Windows 7, cannot get the video driver to...

If you look at Sony's main site, this particular model is no longer being made or sold. There are a few refurb shops that sell it, but I don't see one in stock anywhere. It looks as though this was a strong 32 bit system originally. Makes me wonder why you chose the 64 bit route.

Sony will almost definitely not build drivers for a model it no longer makes and sells, as you'll find most manufacturers won't. My only suggestion at this point would be to try a 32 bit upgrade in Win 7 and see if that works.

Also, a 32 built system will often not recogize even a full 3 gig of ram. You might also try removing the 4 gig of ram and reinstalling your original ram. You didn't say which speed ram you used.

Ram Upgrade

Max speed supported for your mobo is: DDR2-533
You will have to buy (4) 1gb sticks (2gb sticks not supported)
To use all four gigs of ram you need a 64 bit os.32 bit only supports 3gb of ram. Hope this helps!

My E-machines laptop's internet connection is slow via Wi-Fi. My e-machines laptop does not connect to the internet at full speed when on the Wi-Fi network however on Ethernet it will connect at its full speed. Now I know Wi-Fi does tend to be slower than direct cable connection however I do have other laptops in the house and they all produce the following results on broadband speed tests on the internet: E-Machines laptop: 4.7 Mbps (seems to cap out at this speed) Other laptop(s): 5.7 Mbps This only happens in my home network because if I take my E-machines elsewhere to other networks it can reach higher speeds. So that rules out that something is wrong with my Wi-Fi adapter built into it. I currently have At&t U-Verse service with a 6 Mbps internet service with a 2Wire Router/Modem Gateway. I had a technician from At&t come out and he checked the router and said it was fine nothing wrong with it. He checked the internet line and indeed I am receiving the full internet speed. His very own laptop connected to the Wi-Fi and received 5.7 Mbps just fine. The interesting thing is that previously when I had At&t FastAccess Dsl with the 6.0 Mbps service as well, I would receive via Wi-Fi on this very laptop 5.2 Mbps however, in that case that is what every other device would receive as well because the internet speed coming into the home was about 5.6 Mbps max because of the Dsl tech. So all in all, what could be going on with my computer that is causing it to max out a full Megabit lower than all the other devices connecting to the same network??? I am running Windows XP with all the updates, no issues with the computer such as Viruses or AdWare either. P.S. I've used both and Speakeasy broadband tests on all the laptops tested (even the iPhone and iPod Touch).
