My Kenmore refrigerator model 253.6419240N stopped cooling and freezing overnight. The fan still runs but it does not sound like the compressor is kicking in.

You would probably need to replace the defrost thermostat sensor......it is probably defective.....its a sensor that detects temps and shuts down the compessor when temps are satisfied.....now your unit just keeps workin, and working, and working and never shuts down....until the compressor overheats and shuts down due to the overload protector kickin in.............

you will need to open the back panel in the freezer compartment.....unplug unit first........take out panel and unplug harness.......there should be a round sensor that clips onto the copper pipe............it should have two wires coming out of it..........unclip it from the pipe............cut the wires at least one inch from the clip......wires should be orange/yellow or blue/brown......just cut the wires that comes out from it........do not be confused of the other two wires.................get your model number and source for a replacement part....or just purchase a universal replacement......just resplice wires follow the color codes, yellow to yellow and orange to orange....and use wire nuts and black tape afterwards and install panel and test unit.....observe it for 24 hours....................................
.
note evaporator coils are very sharp be careful and safe at all times.......
a feed back would be good if this helps.................

unplug your unit first........take out the top panel as stated above, disconnect the harness from the panel.........diconnect the terminals from the fan motor and take out motor......there should be at least 3 wires......red/black or white and green.........test the motor to see if it is defective....or have someone who's familiar with basic electrical.....if the motor is still good......reconnect and test.....at least let the unit sit overnight and then plug it in the morning.....the compressor might just be overheated...................and not turning on the fan and compressor........but if the fan motor is no good....get your model number and source for a new replacement motor or a universal motor....then install and test .............it should be able to turn on right away............the fan motor should always be working.....it takes the cold air from the freezer and throws it down to the bottom refrig.........if the fan is not working at all only the top would get cold.......it will also ice over/freeze up/like antartica/kaput.....................lol

    good luck

a feed back would be good if this helps..............

Kenmore side by side is not getting cold or freezing

If the refrigerator isn't cool, you need to answer some questions, then see if the compressor is running.
First, answer these questions:
Is the refrigerator completely dead?
If so, see “It's stopped completely.”

The compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. It's on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. If it is humming or making a continuous noise and your refrigerator is still not cooling, there may be a more serious problem with one or more of several different components, we recommend contacting a qualified appliance repair technician for further help.

If the compressor is not running but you do have power to the refrigerator, there may be a problem with one or more of these:
The compressor
The Thermostat
The overload, relay, or capacitor
The defrost timer
The condenser fan motor

The freezer and the fridge are cooled by the same system, air is moved to the fridge by a fan from the freezer, either the circulation fan is defective or the fridge thermostat is defective.

REFRIGERATOR IS MAKING A BUZZING SOUND, not cooling

You have one of two problems going on. Your fan is spinning at hitting the sides. Or your compressor is shot which seems to be more the problem and even though it is cold the humming sound is a warning for you that the compressor is shot and it is more affordable to replace the fridge then the compressor. Sometimes compressor can cost more then the fridge.

Cooling and freezing problem

When the frig stops cooling properly, is it running at all? If the freezer fan is running and it is not cooling, you can rule out the thermostat and the defrost control. It would be a hard starting compressor or condenser fan. If the frig is not running, then it is likely the thermostat or your electronic defrost control. The defrost control is right behind the thermostat in the same housing. When you play with the Tstat, do it carefully as not to jar the defrost control. If the frig comes on, replace the thermostat.

Freezer not freezing and fridge not cooling

Check the back wall of the freezer for ice buildup.
If yes, a defrost parts problem.
Check the freezer fan. Is it running?
If no, replace the freezer fan.
Check the condenser fan at the compressor. Is it running?
If no, is compressor hot?
If compressor is hot replace condenser fan motor.
If compressor is not hot.
Replace the compressor start relay.

Unplug the Ref for 15-20 min., plug it back in and listen for the compressor to start. You will need to be behind the Ref so you can tell if the compressor or the fan is running. It will help to take the cover off so you can see the compressor.
Compressor not running but you hear a clicking noise. The relay needs to be replaced.
Compressor runs but not cooling. Low on coolant
