Norton is a miserable product to try to remove ... so many have complained about it that Norton provides a manual removal tool for many of their products.

Start here ... http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

You may find a spedific tool for your particular product/version/edition.

I have used the manual instructions for several Norton products ... even the manual removal was not complete. I saw and removed many entries in the registry the third time around.

Before you work on the registry, make sure you do a complete reg back up. First time through follow the removal instructions exactly ... go slow ... try your computer. I suggest you go through again and look for more registry entries that are Norton ... remove them if you still have troubles.

If you are not comfortable with editing the registry, you might consider having this done by someone who is familiar with the process.

If you have tried using Add/Remove with no success, use this tool. Before you download this tool close all running McAfee applications. Download the tool and save to your desktop. Double click MCPR.exe to start the removal tool. After it finishes restart your computer. The download link is on this page under "Removing McAfee Automatically" http://www.pchell.com/virus/uninstallmcafee.shtml

You uninstall it.

  1. Click Start
  2. Click on Settings
  3. Click on Control Panel
  4. Click on ADD/REMOVE Software icon.
  5. Now choose from the list the software you want uninstalled, that is, your McAfee Antivirus.
  6. The system will prompt you to restart. Just restart your computer so that the program will totally be uninstalled and removed.

Please remove Antivirus 2009 As I have McAfee security thru Comcast for free !

Antivirus 2009 is a virus and the fastest way to remove it would be to format the system over. However, if your lucky enough to have it in your ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS list, then remove it before it really gets messy. I just finished trying to clean this one and ended up reformatting the system. Now, if you need to do that, and your a bit technically incline, backup your profile located under C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\%accountname%
de3bf73.jpg
In the pictured example, OWNER is the primary account. Copy this to an external as this holds all your settings and documents and pictures provided you saved everything as a default to MY DOCUMENTS.

McAfee can't remove this virus.

I have a friend that just purchased an acer aspire one D255E notebook. He doesn't have an anti virus yet. He tried to access the internet and it told him he already had 68 viruses. Of course the only...

Is the thing telling him he has 68 viruses McAfee? There are a lot of malware and viruses out there that tell you either your system is infected or some pretend you have hardware issues. They generally have a "Fix" button that tells that your subscription expired and try to harvest your person information and credit card. Don't give them any information, and contact your credit cards immediately if you "purchased" a new licence. They're pretty good about refunding your money about stuff like that.
If he doesn't have anything important on it yet and it has a recovery partition or restore discs, he can try using them. That would wipe the drive including any viruses / trojans / malware.
I probably wouldn't get Mcafee, Trend Micro, or Norton, they're all pretty terrible. Try getting Webroot, Kaspersky, or one of the free online ones (Avast!, Immunet Protect Antivirus, Spyware doctor with antivirus). Just make sure you only have one on at a time.
Please leave feedback if this was helpful. Thanks.

How to uninstall an antivirus software to install an up to date antivirus software?

Try Add/Remove Programs found by clicking Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, locate software by name, click remove.

If this doesnt work, almost every antivirus has its own special removal tool. McAfee is found here :
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

Norton is here:
http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN&ln=en_US

Avast is here:
http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe

AVG is here:

and the list goes on...

I am trying to download McAfee Antivirus and keep getting error 76556 that does not permit installation I already removed all the other Antivirus/Firewall from the computer.... But still when i try to...

Was the other antivirus/firewall program you had installed on your PC McAfee or another brand? If there was another brand (example: Symantec) you will need to run a full uninstall utility (accessable from most software vendors websites). If the other antivirus/firewall was McAfee, run the full uninstall utility which is called the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool which you can obtain at the link I provided below; again this is for McAfee products only. If the last software you had on your PC was McAfee, then run this tool, this will do a complete job of removing old remnants that Add/Remove does not. It will then reboot your PC, and after which you should be able to reinstall your new McAfee software.

If it wasn't McAfee, you will have to check the company's site for a removal tool as Symantec (as an example) has one too.
