Make sure the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler are not clogged. Turn both jet screws CW to stops (lightly), then back out 1-1/2 turns CCW each. This is a basic setting which should allow the engine to start and run. Allow the engine to warm up, then pull the throttle full on--it should be 4-stroking. Turn the H screw CW until the engine speeds up somewhat, but still 4-stroking. Proper setting is 4-stroking unloaded, but immediate 2-stroking when cutting. Release the throttle and adjust L CW until the engine runs fairly smoothly, yet allows the engine to 'follow-the-throttle'. Set idle speed screw so that the chain stops turning, but the engine continues to run. Hope this helps!

How many turns in air screw?


turn the mixture screw all the way in then back it out between 1 1/2 turns to 2 turns
that will get the engine to idle from there set the idle speed with the throttle screw to desired idle rpms
now turn the mixture screw in slowly until you see/hear a fall in rpms
now screw the screw out until again you hear /see a fall in rpms.
half of the number of turns back in from in to out will be the desired air /fuel mixture setting
adjust the idle with the throttle screw if it has altered
you can repeat the procedure again to fine tune the mixture after adjusting the throttle screw

Why would my 1997 harley sportster xl 883 run hotter then usual & when it's hot and I shut it off it doesn't want to shut right off I can't figure . The carburetor was rebuilt. tune up was done .


I suspect that the engine tune up was not well done as a hot running motor after a carby overhaul indicates that it is running too lean
could be possible carby to manifold gasket failed or leaking or the carby bolts not tight
could be incorrect float level or the air /fuel mixture screw not adjusted correctly
if the carby has a solenoid near the mixture screw then if that is not working properly ,the motor will "run on" after the ignition is turned off as the pistons will still be getting a charge through the idle circuit that is being ignited by hot spots in the cylinder.

What is the adjustment screw under the throttle?


Hi Darren, on the right hand side of the carburator there is an idle adjusting screw with a spring behind it, turn screw clockwise to increase idle counter clockwise to decrease idle. At the front of the carburetor on the bottom of the venturi bore there is also an air/fuel mixture screw inside a carb body lug that may or may not be plugged with an aluminum cap that's about 3/16" thick. This cap can be drilled out to acess the air/fuel mixture screw. Turning screw clockwise will lean out mixture and lower idle, turning screw counter clockwise will richen mixture and raise idle. Start by turning gently the screw clockwise until it just barley bottoms out then back it out 1 3/4 turns. You need to balance the two adjusting screws to obtain an idle of 950-1000 RPM then back out air/fuel mixture screw 1/8 turn, snap throttle to confirm responce, you may continue to back out air/fuel mixture screw untill desired throttle responce is achieved, if you see black smoke coming out of exhaust you have gone to far and need to turn screw back in 1/8 turn at a time, final adjustment should be made with the engine at normal operating temperature. Hi, Anonymous it should be noted that the "AIR FUEL" mixture screw adjustment "ONLY" manages your idle and has no effect on any other circuit also any intake leaks must be repaired before the A/F adjustment procedure can be performed otherwise you will never obtain a proper idle and you will waste a lot of time chasing the impossible. The A/F mixture screw's purpose is to fine tune the fuel charge entering the combustion chamber. The following applies to both 2 and 4 stroke engines:
1. The mixture screw may be sealed at the factory with a Welch Plug please review the following video for removal.

2. The mixture screw manages a range of 3 complete 360-degree counterclockwise turns from the bottom/closed position.
3. The mixture screw should have a spring and o-ring for tension and sealing integrity.

How do i tune the carby on a peewee 50? the bike wont run properly

1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Float needle and seat sticking.
5. Float level too low.
6. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
7. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
8. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
9. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
10. Slow fuel jet clogged.
11. Faulty fuel pump.

Will start with some amonut of choke on, but will ...


Carby carby carby!
Give the carby a flush with some Carby Cleaner. (retail 400g aerosol can)
Check condition and clamping of inlet manifold for cracks, warping or air leaks.
Reset Slide Needle one notch down.
Turn air mixture screw fully in and back out one and one half turns and try idling now.
When you get engine idling turn the air mixture screw in or out to the highest revs without use of throttle. Reset idle to optimum speed with throttle stop or idle screw.
