Question about Cameras
It sounds like your battery is good, but make sure it's charged all the way, and then try it. It sounds like the lens can either be stuck, the gears that drive it out can be bad, or some sand or dirt is making it stick. First thing to try is some compressed air. Blow it in the front of the lens assembly, in hopes of freeing up the gears. If the doesn't work, you can try to gently pull on the lens as you power it up, hoping to engage the gears. Since the unit is making a noise, it is trying to extract the lens, and may just need a little help. If none of these things work, the unit will have to be disassembled and repaired. A broken or stripped gear inside the lens assembly is usually fixed by replacement of the whole assembly, since it isn't labor conducive to take the assembly apart to replace one tiny gear. If you have tried all the suggestions, and want to have it repaired, get an estimate first. The cost of repair can easily exceed the replacement cost of a new camera. Here is an excellent blog about a lens error, and although it's on a different camera, the symptom and problem are the same. It lists all the things you can try to free it up, but it also lists some things that might work, but could possibly further damage the camera. Only try them if you decide not to have it serviced.
Good luck, and hope this helps. They say about 50% of the lens problems can be fixed trying their suggestions.
