Question about Bernina Activa 130

1 Answer

I have a Bernina Activia 125. The top stitch thread is leaving loops on the bottom of the stitching around the bobbin thread. The bobbin thread seems to be taught enough- but the top thread isn't staying taught at all. It's also inconsistantly loose. A couple inches will be taught- then the next couple will be loose. Thanks in advance.

My Bernina Artista 185 has been looping the top thread on the underneath side. Is this a tension problem? No amount of adjustment seems to correct it. What can I do to correct the looping problem?

It is a tension problem. My advice is always to double check in the manual that you are threading correctly. With loops underneath, your tension is too loose, or the bobbin is not seated properly.

try a new needle--one that is for the fabric being sewed
then try to adjust the top thread tension again, if the stitches remain loose and the tension won't adjust then the tension knob needs to be checked to see if there is something wrong with it.
also check to make sure the bobbin is inserted correctly into the bobbin case, if the bobbin is not turned the right way in the bobbin case the sewing machine will not stitch correctly.

I need to find out how to set up my machine for polyester/spandex material.

For spandex you will probably want to use a size 70 needle for stretch fabric. You should be able to leave your tension settings on standard tension but may need to go for a slightly shorter stitch length.
try stitch length of 2.5 or 3
tension of 3.5
check your bobbin tension, to do this thread the bobbin and suspend it in the air holding the thread. If the bobbin falls to the floor the tension is too loose. If the bobbin hangs in the air and you give a gentle tug on the string the bobbin should slide along the thread an inch or so. If it doesn't budge it's too tight.

When you say the thread is not the same on top as the bottom do you mean you are using different threads or that the stitches are coming out different on the top to the bottom of the fabric?

Why won't my Bernina Activa 140 sew the blind hem stitch?

Are you absolutley sure you're not getting a problem with stitch formation on, for example, wide zig-zag. Check again, using a different colour top and bottom and make sure that the stitch is being formed properly with only the top colour on top and bottom colour on the bottom. It sounds as though the bottom loop is not being picked-up by the hook properly. Make sure you've thoroughly cleaned-out any fluff under the stitch-plate and remove the hook/shuttle and give the hook race a good clean and give it a single drop of oil, even if you've got the lightweight part-plastic hook/shuttle fitted.

Check the bobbin tension and that the thread is tight around the bobbin. Make sure that the bobbin is in the right way around - the bobbin thread should double back on itself coming out of the bobbin holder.

My top stitch is flat, but the bobbin is bunching and looping extra thread. cotton fabric, polyester thread

What looks like a bobbin problem is sometimes the threading of the top thread.

If you threaded the machine with the presser foot down, the tension is closed and the thread cannot enter as it should.

Improper seating of the thread into the tension results in loopy stitching as the thread is not being guided at the proper tension to create a satisfactory stitch.

Try re-threading the machine with the presser foot up.

Stitching too tight on top

I found a screw on the bobbin case (where you put the cotton for the underside stitching) which was very loose. I tightened it and that created more tension for the bottom thread which solved the problem.

Thread tension problem when sewing on heavy fabrics

Sometimes when I need to use heavy thread for top stitching to reinforce a seam that has come undone, I will use the heavy thread on the top and regular thread on the bottom. I haven't tried it the other way around for hemming but I would think it would work. I do not currently have a Bernina.
