I have got it all connected right and have used the firmware from Pioneer download but it will not allow me to access hard drive to record. I only have access to VHS or DVD as machine starts up showing HDD ERR then defaults to DVD

Thanks so far have checked hard disk is set to master but formatting HD is going to be where the real problems start as i can not get service manual for DVR-RT601H as no one appears to have one (that includes Pioneer UK who say they only supply to their recognised service centres). Hope you might have a trick up your sleeve keeping my fingers crossed.

Still no joy on getting a service manual and apart from taking it to a service centre no one seems to be able to help all seem to think it's down to the CPRM and the need for a service remote. Have you any ideas.

Thanks you have given a few angles to look at, as for going to Pioneer service people to get them to finish the job they won't do it any cheaper than if they had done the whole job (had already asked). Will let you know how i get on again thanks.

It is normal getting an error message if the hd is new

You need to check that the hdd is well connected to the cable inside your dvd. Check also that the pin bridge at the back of your new hard disk is not set as slave. It think it should be set as master/stand alone. Eventually try both master options. When you ensure everything above is ok, you will need to format and write image into your HD. Not many DVD device like yours do this automatically, usually you have to access a service menu and restore the hdd image.
You need to get the service manual, which will display the whole procedure. You can request and buy it from pioneer for about $25, or try downloading free version from this website here.
The download is a bit tricky, but at the end it will work. You will need WinRAR to unpack the manual, and will need to download all files, as it is a split-up.

Pioneer service manual are not easy to find.I do not have the service manual for rt601.
Here uploaded for you to dowload the manual for 620 and 720 models, which are not very different from your device.
In the last couple of page is descripted a service reset procedure , which is the one supposed to restore hard drive settings. It is likely that works the same on your model, usually service procedure are same for same range of models.

This company programmes Pioneer service remote and service disk. You need to contact them and explain your specific problem, so that they can send you the proper product.
Pioneer, as many other company does its best to prevent users from serviceing their products, mainly for safety reasons.

If you have to buy the remote for additional $20/$50, you may consider asking a service to finish the job you started. If you already installed the HDD correctly, and the serviceman does not even need to open your device, it may be done for a modest fee. Find a reliable and hones service in your area and get the job done for $50/$80, that is my suggestion.

Sorry I forgot the link for piooner remote programmers, here you go.
Keep in mind that this are not original Pioneer service remotes, are hacked remotes customized to execute only required operation. They should be able to provide you a remote or a disk to reinstall your HDD image, but I cannot guarantee it works. Only pioner distributes original service remotes and service manuals.

Pioneer DVR-310S LSI NG problem

I have been told LSI NG on my Pioneer 510 HDD Recorder refers to failure of the large Scale Intigraton Chip (LSI for short) so it is saying the L.S.I. Chip is No Good.

Some have commented elsewhere this might be a failure of a hard disk leading to this and to try and change the HDD out and see if the failure continues as this may cause the LSI statement...

My service tech just told me this is plausible but unlikely and the Pioneer 310/510 DVD Recorders are getting old and the LSI chips are starting to fail on them.

I regret to say the recorder is probably failing on you due to it's age. My tech commented to me these are supposedly good for five years and their current age is almost 11 years.

Remainig use life depends on the unit and how much it has been used. We got into this with a failed DVD burner on our unit which you use to burn from the HDD Hard Disk in the 510 (the 310 is a DVD Recorder only).

Just a note on servicing these units. If you remove the DVDR or HDD you then need a service remote and service DVD on these units to reset the code in the units or they will not work.

If you open them up and start disconnecting the drives and don't have these tools you will not be able to reset them and the units will not work even if there is no problem (so you have been forewarned about this).

I'd check on line for a refub unit as there are very few qualified techs to deal with these and many lack the tools for these old units. People like them because they have many great features but are no longer made. I was told all of the 510's were made within six months in I believe 2003 or 2004...

Hi.. please help i have a pioneer hard drive dvr-520H. i love it and have never had any problems over the years. but just yesterday it froze up on me when i was trying to watch a recorded show. now when i...

Those circles are there as a sign that the unit has not finished loading the indicator - it's a wait signal. This happens because the processor no longer recognizes the indicator for the shows you recorded so yes, this is a big defect.
The unit is repairable - you will have to replace the hard drive and reprogram the unit - but this is a long and costly procedure. It will be cheaper just to buy a new one.

Pioneer DVR-450H-S HDD problem

Well if it is out of warranty and there is no recall then you do not have much choice. How much does it cost for a new DVR with a warranty? Might be better to spend the extra money and get a new one with a warranty. If you have them repair it make sure they give you at least a 1 year warranty on it and not 90 days. And make sure the warranty covers parts and labor.

DVR 450h keeps freezing and says to get to a repair shop but how do i know where to get repair and would like to do it myelf, The disk is okay, i thinnk i need to download driver or something...thanx

Hi, I am a technician. to solve this problem you have to change a new hard drive or re-format the old one.
After replace or format you must have a pioneer service remote control in order to enter the serial number ID for bios system to recognize the hard drive and the DVD drive in the system, otherwise the recorder will not work at all with the new hard drive.

For more information you can e-mail me at

good luck.

Hard drive shows full even after erasing 120 hours.

You should empty the recycled bin in the system and delete all temporary files on it.

Faulty hard drive

Your hard drive needs to be replaced. They don't tell you in the operators manual, but these drives are extremely vulnerable to shock (even a 1/4" drop can kill them) and temperature change.

These machines are not sophisticated enough to mark bad sectors and work around them. Without a new hard rive, your machine will not work.

It is very unlikely, but there is a tiny chance you could reset the hard drive with a service remote. But considering how expensive and difficult it is to get a service remote, it is not worth the effort. You would also need a service manual, whic BTW is not particularly good, so you would need a lot of time and the chances of success are very small.

Considering repair costs, you may be better off financially to get a new DVR.
