Can I replace a Shimano RD-TY15 with a Shimano Tourney TX?

This may be to do with the replacement having a shorter cage, so it can't go on the big sprocket and big chain ring at the same time.

Try to not use the big rear sproket and the the big front chaining at at the same time,

What does each gear mean, ie.: is gear 1 for hills, etc. what do I do if chain comes off? If I need a part, where do I go to get it?

    1. The ratio of the driving gear to the driven gear is the gear ratio. Lower ratios give higher torque; higher ratios give higher speed. You can't have both.

Search engine "how do gears work on a bicycle"; "what do I do if chain comes off"; "how to shift a bicycle". Many videos and resources.

    2. Bicycle shops, eBay, online Search Engines

How do I operate the 8 gears on my bicycle as I have no instruction manual ? Please advise. My bicycle is a "Carolina Free Spirit". Thanks

Google bicycle shifting technique, for example:

    http://coachlevi.com/cycling/complete-beginner-guide-to-bicycle-gears-shifting/

The basics of shifting are these:

    1) The big ring and right side of the cassette in back are for speed.

    2) The small ring and the left side of the cassette are for high torque, lower speed

    3) The middle ring works with all rear cogs.

Avoid crossing left front to right rear and vice-cersa. It cause excess side loads on the chain.

Question, . . need to replace chain Will a Sram PC-971 Chain work on my 8 speed road bike? Thanks T.K Yandell

Nope - This is a 9spd chain. The gears on a 9spd are narrower than on an 8spd. If you are going to use a SRAM chain you need one that starts with an 8 such as PC-850.

Any 8spd chain will work fine, Shimano, SRAM, whatever.

We need to replace the bicycle chain. I'm the grandmother and need help. Thanks

Depends, is it a single speed? Then you buy one with a master link. If, it has gears you need to have a chain tool. I would go to a local bike shop and have them replace it. I am sure that you will only pay a minimun charge to install it right for you. We do it while a customer waits, it is that quick of a job.

Can i remove a 5 gear sprocket from 26" tire, and replace it with a 7 gear sprocket from a 20" tire? my roomates touring bike is currently a 15 speed, she loves the bike and does not want to replace it....

Several scenariosto consider here. First of all the compatibility with the hub. Second is the deraileur tarvel and the actual shifter. Components are normally matched in sets from factory and do not transfer over unless the entire set, shifter, deraileur and sprocket. Then there is the issue of chain wear fitting the crank and new hub together. Chains and gears seat into each other as they wear so a crank set should stay with the original hub as well, even if you were to install a new chain the wear pattern would be different.
So the short answer is unless the brands all match and are in new condition and the hubs are the same thread and diameter, you will not get good results

The chain wants to jump off while trying to change gears

There are several things that could be wrong:

    Shifter out of adjustment

    Chain worn

    Chain and gear(s) worn

    Shifter out of adjustment:
Try adjusting the cable tension by turning the barrel (the part between the cable and the shifter). Count the number of turns and reset it to its original position if this doesn't solve it.

    Chain worn:
Chains wear out. hold a ruler up to it, with one end centered on a pin. 12" away, another pin should like up very very very close to the 12" mark. If not, it's probably worn out and needs to be replaced. No way around it. Some say chains are good for 500 miles only. Your mileage may vary. (keep reading...)

    Chain worn and gear(s) worn:
If the bike has been ridden witha worn chain for a while, it will make the gears in the back wear faster too, and a new chain alone will not work. If this is the case, you need a new chain and new gears in the back. Often, gears in the back are replaced all at once in a 'cassette'. You'll have to make sure your front gears aren't worn out too!
