Hi again,
the I / o switch is for i = ignition or ON - the O = off

not seeing the choke you will need to push the control one way or the other - using memory push the choke control full one way and try to start the unit - it if fires off pull it back about 1 quarter of the way back away from full on choke.
As for pushing the bulb - if the unit has not been started for a month or more - push the bulb 10 times. - if you're restarting the unit after a short pause in use then 3 times.
Best of luck with this.
Also you might just want to drop by a Lowes hardware and they will help you if you need further help.

Thanks for choosing Fix Ya

Brand new mantis motor/started when i got it let set for a couple months wont run it will start on choke

The first thing I would do would be to dump out all of the old gasoline mix from the tank and replace it with fresh gasoline mixed with the proper amount of 2-cycle oil.

Starting manual for mantis

all of the mantis tiller manuals can be found here:
http://mantis.com/mantis-owners-manuals.asp
just pick out the appropriate one and away you go.

as far as starting it goes, make sure the switch is set to "I" and not "O" (top handle.) be sure you have gas in it, pull out the choke knob (front of the tiller) and depress the bubble once. pull the engine cord until the machine tries to start, then push in the choke and pull again - the engine should start within a couple of pulls. let it warm up before you try to do any tilling, and you're good to go!

Mantis only runs with choke half on.

Try fuel with 30% injector cleaner (or 25% auto transmission fluid) Something is clogging the fuel route.

Mantis will only run when the choke is on. If I try to push the choke in it dies.

Having owned a Mantis for many years it sounds like your air/fuel mixture may be to lean when you push the choke in. First check the simple stuff. Make sure you are using fresh fuel with the proper 2-cycle oil mixture. Check or replace the fuel and air filters. Replace the spark plug annually. These are the routine maintenance procedures found in your owner's manual. If none of this solves your problem either the carb fuel mix adjustment screws are not set properly or a carb rebuild kit is needed. The proper setting for the mixture screws should be detailed in your manual. Removing the carb and replacing the needle valves, gasket and other items takes a little more expertise. Before jumping in to this and assuming all other maintenance has been performed press the fuel primer bulb several times before trying to start it. You should feel resistance after 3-4 pushes. If you don't feel any resistnace the carb is not being primed and the bulb needs replacement (you may notice a small fuel leak if this is the case). If you can get it primed, pull the choke out, start and let it run a minute or so. Then make small, gradual changes by turning the fuel mix screws (not the idle adjustment) as noted in your manual. Try to push the choke in half way or as far as you can without killing the engine. If may run a little rough but continue tweaking the screws until it smooths out a little. Gradually continue pushing the choke in and turning the adjustment screws as needed to keep it from stalling. This is best done with the tines supported off the ground during adjustments. Just make sure to protect yourself and others from coming in to contact with them. When set correctly you should be able to achieve full throttle with the choke fully closed. A little time and patience should get you up and going again. Of course you can always contanct Mantis at www.mantis.com or call them for troubleshooting assistance. Hope this helps.

Can not find my manual for the mantis tiller..forgot hot to start it up for the first time

You should be able to go to the Mantis web site and download the owners manual. To start, make sure the switch in turned on, push the fuel primer bulb several times (until you feel resistance), pull the choke out all the way and pull the starter rope until it fires. Then, push the choke half way in and it should start. Let it run a 30 seconds to 1 minute and then push the choke all the way in. Be sure you are using the currect fuel/oil mixture with fresh gas and oil. If you have not done so already clean the air filter and replace the spark plug at the recommended interval.

Starting instructions on off switch only labeled O and -

O and I are the international symbols for off and on. The O is the off position and the I is the on position. Put the switch in the I position. Make sure there is properly mixed fuel in the tank. Your Mantis probably uses fuel mixed 1 part 2cycle oil to 50 parts gasoline. Push the primer bulb a few times until you see fuel in the bulb. Position the choke lever to full choke, open the throttle completely and use short, quick pulls on the rope until the engine sputters. Reposition to choke to half and pull the rope again. The engine should start at this time. Let the engine run for a few seconds, then push the choke lever to off. Go to work in the garden.
Good luck!

Mantis tiller starts but will not stay running

Carburetor problem. Two stroke engines use oil mixed with gas. Old fuel or setting over the winter will cause varnish and sludge in the Carburetor. Start by buying a can of carburetor cleaner and mixing a new can of fuel.
1) Dump the old fuel and check replace it with new.
2) Remove the air cleaner.
3) Pump the prime bulb 3 or 4 times, set the choke, spray the insides of the carb with the cleaner and then try and start it . It should sputter and run for a few second but chances are it will take a few sprays to clean the jets

How do you start a 2 stroke Mantis? I lost the book. Will

first, push the primer bulb a few times to get fuel circulated and air out of the carb. Turn on the switch, put the choke on full. Pull the rope until you hear it fire. Then put it on half choke. Pull the rope; it should fire within a few pulls, and should run. Take the choke the rest of the way off once it's running well. This is a standard starting procedure that works well for every kind of 2-stroke engine used in the garden.
