Question about Bosch Evolution 500 SHE45M06UC Built-in Dishwasher

1 Answer

2 yr. old dishwasher starting to disappoint-spotty glasses, etc.

I was so happy with the sparkling glasses that came out of my new Bosch for 1 1/2 yrs.  Now they are filmy, smudgy and streaky, mostly on the outside.  Some silverware has little rust spots and smudges on them- mainly knives and forks.  Sometimes I have to lightly scour out the bottom of a saucepan that doesn't come out shiny clean.  And my stainless steel dishwasher door used to look so shiny and clean when I opened it- now it's filmy, streaky and rainbow colored in patches. I have used the same dishwasher detergent (Cascade), rinse agent, (Jet Dry) since we got it.  We have hard water.  I've been adding a 1/4 cup of Calgon the last 3 times to see if there is an improvement.  Nothing noticeable so far.  I've cleaned the screens and checked the rinse holes like the handbook says to see if calcium has built up, but there wasn't much showing, and I rinsed it off. Maybe my water has changed in its hardness?  Maybe the minerals are doing something inside that I can't see that is causing it to rinse poorly? Do dishwashers start to go bad after 2 yrs. with hard water? Any ideas/suggestions would be helpful.

If you have hard water, glasses can look spotted and cloudy even after cleaning. Sometimes changing the dishwasher detergent can help. The easiest solution to clearing up glasses that start to look cloudy is to add some vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher before you start a cycle. Simply add 1/4 of white vinegar and it will clear up your glasses very well.
You should see marked improvement after the first time you do this. If they are not crystal clear then simply repeat the process until all of the cloudiness is gone. In fact I recommend to using a little vinegar in each cycle to maintain the clarity of the glass.

Note: you can pre-test this by rubbing some vinegar on an individual glass with a cloth. If you cannot remove the cloudiness by soaking it and rubbing vinegar on it then it is possible that the glass is etched due to harsh or cheap dishwasher detergent and vinegar will not solve the problem.

Spotty, filmy glasses

Even if you are sending it 120 degree water from your hot water heater, if the internal heating element has failed, your will get poor cleaning, including a film on your glassware.
Replacing the heating element will almost certainly fix the problem.
Good Luck!

Dishes not cleaned

When ever I hear of a dishwasher "suddenly" not cleaning properly, with spots on the glassware and soap not dissolving:

-If the spots are white patches, you can suspect the DW detergent powder. Go buy a name brand of detergent powder and I bet you will see a dramatic improvement. You may need to run a cycle or two with white vinegar added (up to two cups added after the DW starts, fills and begins to wash.)

-If the spots are a film / slime, you should suspect that the heating element. For the dW to be effective cleaning and rinsing clear, the DW needs to raise the water temp during the ~wash~ cycle (after the detergent dispenser has magically opened. After the heating element has been replaced, you will see an immediate improvement.

-If you had reported food debris sticking to dishes, (which you didn't), the first thing to do is clear the holes in the wash arms, then open the sump area , remove the filter assembly and inspect closely with a flashlight to locate blocking debris. (watch out for broken glass!) Inspect the impeller and make sure it is not damaged. If after assembly, the cleaning is still poor, it is time to replace the wash pump / motor assembly.

Good Luck! Ask more questions as needed!

Bosch Dishwasher SHV4303UC - Does not drain.

Try looking for slithers of glass etc under the impeller. Remove the sump covers (filters) and look into the bottom. There will probably be a small cover held down by a screw. Under this is the impeller. Roll up a hand towel into a cigarette shape and slide this under the impeller - that should clear anything out.

Bosch dishwasher

Although I previously posted with the same problem of a film on the dishes after cleaning, I did find a section in the owner's manual which solved my problem. Lift up the rinse aid cap on the inside door - the factory setting is on "4". The rinse aid works in conjunction with your local water, which has variations in it's hardness or softness. When your dishes are streaky, lower the rinse aid setting to 1 or 2. If your dishes are spotted, raise the rinse aid setting higher.
