Question about CB Radios

Radio Shack trc-241 CB won't power up on battery pack.

Radio doesn't power up after being used on power from automobile cigarette lighter. I suspect user unplugged the power before turning the radio off. Perhaps this killed the unit?

I had the same problem. The 12 v jack is faulty, use compressed air to blow it out. If that doesn't work, you need to get a needle and pry out the flat connector inside the jack (the ground). From the back of the connector, pry it toward the center conductor. The spring action is weak. I disassembled mine, but you may be able to do it with the case on.

That should not hurt it, that would be the same as turning off the vehicle while the radio is on. which is not a problem.... check the fuse. maybe it blew when the vehicle went back on. or maybe check the actual plug itself.

Customer has lost his power supply cord. where can he purchase another cord. power cord is three prongs.

  • Hi, I can help.

  • For the Radio Shack TRC-447 this is just a standard 3 PIN DC cord. Many CB's use the same cord and they are interchangeable. Some Cobra, Uniden, Radio Shack use the same cord. Texxcomm is a great place to get parts from.

I just got my first cb and am trying to install it. I have connected the red wire in the fuse box( to the radio) and grounded the black wire. turned the car on and I cannot get any power to the CB, but the...

Take a deep breath and start over! The best way to power this little radio is probably through the cigarette lighter or 12vdc accessory jack. It is simple and straight forward and no fuse box or negative ground wires to worry about. Go the Radio Shack, purchase an adaptor (cig lighter type) and hook it up to your radio wiring being careful to watch polarity. You may have to have your ignition on to run the radio, but that is much safer that maybe blowing up the unit.

Unless you are running a larger more powerful unit or an amp, there is no added benefit to hooking the radio into the fuse box.

Try a bigger antenna as a tune up can not give much.

I was wondering what was the range for the radioshack TRC-447 cb radio with a good cb antenna

Antenna :
-should be tuned, have good coax with no pinches, whip is centered over highest flat metal surface, no metal beside adjacent to whip, power is wired to battery direct, not to ignition or cigg lighter. whip is wiped clean of corrosion, whip is up, longer is better.
Praire City car-to-car: 15-20 km's
Praire Rural car-to-car: four-thirds over the horizon. Probably 60 km's.
Alot further over water.
Less within trees and mountains/valleys.
Google "Ham radio" & "ducting" "inversion" "skip" "sun-spots"
these refer to a condition where a radio signal getting stuck between the upper and lower atmospheres and travel intact for 1000's of km's (canada to mexico for example)

TRC520 CB wont power up

Hello, First of all you only have the Power wire Red, and the ground wire Black to connect for 12v DC to power the unit. If you memory power it is usually connected to a constant power source such as the cigarette lighter or continuous 12V dc powersupply off of the battery. These are the only connections that should be connected to provide power. Since the unit will not turn on I suspect that the CB's power supply and regulator have been blown. Another possible choice is that the radio was working and someone removed the antenna cable and the the RF power amplifier malfunctioned taking the power supply and regulator with it. To solve this problem, check the voltages on the wires before connecting them to the radio (these should be the 12 volt power off of the radio circuit, and the 12 volt power off of the continuous 12V connector (or the cigarette lighter). These voltages should read 12V. Connect the CB with it turned off and measure the voltages (should be 12V) Turn the radio on and check the voltages (should be a little less than 12V) If the radio does not come on then the internal power supply of the radio might be defective (In this case I would advise taking the CB to a qualified radio repair shop) I hope this helps Thank you, Shuttle83 http://www.electron-age-technologies-llc.com

Low to NO noise at all coming out the speaker.

The antenna is the weakest link in the system, I would start there. Do you have access to another antenna that you know works ?

OK. I do not know the exact number for the diode off hand, because I don't have the same radio in front of me. On most cb radios, this diode is usually located on the component side of the pc board, close to where the positive lead solders to the board. Most of the time when it burns, it just becomes brittle.

If you do replace it on your own. The diode is called a rectifier diode, which you can pick up at radio shack or at partsexpress.com. The part number is between 1N4001 to 1N4008. When installing be sure to observe polarity, making sure that the side with the silver band is facing the direction of the arrow.

If I can help anymore, please don't hesitate to ask.
