Question about Liebherr KB4250 Refrigerator

Open Question

My Liebherr KB4250 Refrigerator keeps getting iced up at the back, behind the panels. This means that the cool air is not circulating properly and the temperature at the top of the fridge rises to over 12 deg C. Currently, we are deicing the fridge every 4 - 6 weeks.

SOURCE: Fan not working, temperature too cold

You may need a man. Mine was doing the same, The sensor repair kit costs £35 the labour £60, both plus vat, so that was £109.25 in 2009.

Repair men seem thin on the ground and therefore his traveling time may add up. I believe, repair men pay for a course, and then charge like a wounded bull as they are the only ones that can do anything necessary

The coil behind the freezer back panel is completely covered in ice! Neither side is cooling. Possible leak in water line to ice dispenser dripping onto coil??

The problem is most likely either the defrost timer, and/or the defrost heater element(s) are faulty. The problem is that the defrost heater elements are not functioning properly and the evaporator core is actually freezing up and blocking the air flow through the evaporator core and also freezing up the thermal sensor, and when that happens there is no longer enough cold air being circulated through the refrigerator (that is actually how the unit operates and air must be able to flow through the evaporator core and then be circulated throughout the refrigerator to properly function) and as a result the refrigerator stops functioning and food can even thaw out in the freezer although the freezer seems to be iced up. (Usually at the rear wall where the evaporator core is located)

(Air flow through the evaporator core and cold air circulation and re-circulation through the refrigerator is performed by the air circulation fan and it also must be functioning)

Be sure to only use a blow dryer (with a towel on the bottom of the freezer) to thaw out the evaporator core and do not use any hard or sharp objects or the evaporator core can be damaged. The defrost timer can be located inside of the refrigerator itself, (see lower image) or it can be mounted outside usually either behind the air intake cowl or kick panel at the front base of the refrigerator, or most likely located behind the service panel on the rear of the refrigerator, and usually if the defrost timer is turning then it is most likely working, however the defrost timer can move very slowly and you can place a mark on the timer and the housing to check after about fifteen minutes to see if the position on the defrost timer has changed. The deforst timer on newer digital models can be built into the circuit board and is not a seperate timer mechanism.

Here are some images that should be similar to your situation to help assist you, and let me know if you require any further assistance.

Freezer fan is making noise so I took all food out used a hair dryier to try and melt some of the frost/ice behind the back panel. Before this all the food had frost on them. This is the second time I did...

you need to have someone check the defrost circuit. if the unit does not defrost properly , ice will accumulate on the back panel where the evaporator is, blocking the evaporator fans completely, and the circulation fan will eventually stop working because the ice buildup contacts the blades all the fan motor, and eventually the refrigerator compartment will start to get warmer and warmer because there is no circulation of cool air.

Error message "ER FF". What does this mean?

ER FF is "Error Freezer Fan." Once the evaporator fan stops turning for more than 115 seconds, this error message2.gif will be displayed. This fridge is poorly designed and is not designed with air gaps or enough air gaps to allow air behind the back panel of the freezer where the fans and condenser coils are located thus causing ice to build up around the fan and it's ability to spin. The evaporator fan helps circulate the cold air generated by the condenser coils.

The fix is (1) defrost your refrigerator which means you'll loose all your food if you don't have another unit to keep the food in until it's done defrosting or (2) to dismantle the entire freezer by removing all the trays and railing so that you can pull the back panel far enough to get the front end of a hair dryer over the top lip of the panel to melt the ice. My unit had ice build at the top right and left corners behind the panel. I opted for the latter and didn't have to throw any food away.

This is going to be an annual chore if I want to keep this refrigerator. We should all ban together and call for a recall.

Good Luck

Possible defrost problem. If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air.Since you've already replaced the motherboard Checkdefrost heater, defrost thermostat

Not cooling

Cooling fan, behind internal plasic panel is frozen up, happens with me regularly, self defrost function not working properly, i'm just fixing mine as I write. I have found that bottom drain hole was all full of ice also. Have cleared with anti-freeze/hot water till runs through. Take out all shelves, remove back panel, there are screws behind chrome bezel and also inde-odoriser recesses (those two square plastic covers). Unscrew plastic water chiller, be careful not to damage pipes. Remove the back platic moulding, unclipping wire connectors and cooling fan is fastened to back, it will be frozen up with ice! I use hair dryer/ de-icer to thaw, dry off as much as possible. Beware, moulding is mainly polystyrene, i.e fragile. I suspect that I keep getting problems because I didn't clear out the bottom drain hole, so it did not defrost. Tell tale sign is noisy fan (hitting ice) which eventually freezes up and stops blowing cold air which causes fridge to stop cooling, compressor still works though!

Freezer side will not keep ice cream, popsicles or orange juice frozen. it will make ice in ice cube trays-the ice maker makes very few ice cubes.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check
, defrost heater, defrost thermostat.

there is a fan inside freezer behind back panel. if pipework behind panel is covered with ice, it will prevent air circulation and the fridge is affected first

Amana French Door Refrigerator "on" but no cooling; freezer still works

There are 2 possible problems. One is the defrost cycle is not working properly this is usually indicated by a large amount of frost on the back freezer panel. If so, the circuit will have to be repaired and the evaperator thawed to remove the ice build up. The other is the fresh food damper is not working properly this is behind the "lump" in the back of the fridge compartment above the top shelf, remove the louver panel to see if it is open or closed. closed will be warm open should be cold. The water dispenser reservoir is probably frozen due to poor air circulation.
