Question about Western Digital My Book (WDG1U2500) (G1U2500N) 250 GB Hard Drive

Open Question

Hi; I have a WD mybook essential edition usb 2.0, 250 gb mybook. Recently we moved a lot of furniture, including all my computer. I have several power cords, and I don't know which one goes to the Mybook external drive. Is there any chance you can send me a picture of the correct power cord, or tell me what is written on it ??? I don't have one that says WD or any other identity name or number. My unit has a serial number of WD25001032-001. Thanbk you for any help you can supply. john hathaway jh48burn@aol.com

Hi, As I have responded to a similar post, this is a common problem with external storage. Based on your post/description: 1. Your laptop does not recognize the external hard drive via its USB connection - try on a different computer - if it is still a no go, then it's not a PC problem; 2. Try replacing the cable - again if a no go, so it's not an interface/cable problem; 3. That leaves you only with the WD500GB itself as the possible at fault. An external hardrive would consist of 2 main parts, the electronic board and the hard disk itself. The board seldom (if ever) fails. Its function is to provide conversion/interface from the SATA/IDE connectors of the HD to the out USB/Firewire. The HD more often than not fails. Most external storage uses a standard HD inside the enclosure. Your possible options: a. Claim warranty/replacement; b. Replace the HD only; c. Physically remove the HD and connect it directly inside a desktop either as IDE or SATA and run manufacturer's diagnostic and/or third party recovery software; d. Seek services of professional data recovery firms (if data/files are mission critical); Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.

Hi guys...
I had kind of the same problem like u...when i plugged it into the usb all i got was a "unknown usb device found"
I opened the external case hoping the hdd was still ok only to find out that the hdd cables had been moved slightly out of position..propably from a fall or a knock I didn't even noticed..
I just pressed them back in..click..and everything was back to normal..

These sites have info about how to open the external case..

Change mybook from one pc to another

You have to install the backup software on the new computer. Either download from WD to use what came with the MyBook. Attach the MyBook and find it in My Computer. If it is not there, you have to reboot and find the attached device. After Windows recognized the drive, the backup software will ask you for a new backup but just decline and reactivate the plan (actions/reactivate). That should do it!

Notebook does not recognize My Book / Western Digital hard drive

Did it ever work?

Connect the MyBook to a different desktop computer.
If it is not recognized, then the MyBook definitely has a problem.
Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced,
or check W.D.'s "Customer Loyalty" program -- buy a new W.D. drive through W.D.'s web-site, and get a discount.

Hi, You need to run updates for your computer. Go to start, program, windows update, run and install all the updates, look especially for any update for hardware, select it and let it install. Leave the My book attached to the computer while searching for updates. Good luck.

Yes. The case doesn't care what size the drive is. The computer is just asking for the USB driver for the case. Check the WD site for the driver for the model of MyBook that you have. That should cover it.

WD My Book Essential -- Can't find drivers

It should not really need drivers in Win2K or Vista, you might have a problem with your USB drivers. Go into device manager, remove any devices under the USB heading and reboot. All the drivers should reinstall and hopefully your MyBook will come alive again. Otherwise, try the MyBook on a friend's computer, if it doesn't work there then the MyBook may be faulty itself.

Problem with accessing wd mybook 500

Hi Bella. I just recently had the same problem with my 160GB essential and I found a forum that helped me. The guy said start your computer fully with nothing plugged into your hard drive but the usb plug. Then, after windows has completely loaded, plug your power into the drive. It worked for me like a charm. I hope it does the same for you.
