Generic problem for all VCRs

I have just bought a combo player, but the pictures via the tv for tv, video, and dvd are poor quality.
When I had seperate vcr and dvd players, the pictures thru the tv for everything were fine.
My Tv is an older model, with only one inlet plug.
does having a combo give different reception to the 2 seperatr units, and do I need ?RF Modulator, which I have read about?
Ps Have checked the cable connections
