Question about Brother MFC-5440CN All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

I get a message on the LED saying, "Unable to Clean". This error message, per the manual, suggests it could be a mechanical issue. I've checked for paper jams, paper clips and odd scraps under the printer head, etc. The head is to the far right and instructions say, "Don't force if to the far right". This sounds like a mechanical problem. It's been a great printer for the price, but probably not worth investing in a local service center (spent about $150.00 when new). Any ideas on how to repair?

It gave me a tip on where to look further. I went on to another site and followed a thread of several users who discovered the problem to be an overloaded ink resevoir. I checked with a local Brother service tech who confirmed that "Unable to Clean" and error code 46 refer to this issue.

Solution:

  • Machine off
  • Switch on the machine while holding down the “menu”button until all the leds are flashing on/off. Now you are in “maintenance” mode.
  • Press 80
  • Press the “mono start” button several times until you see “purge: xxxx”
  • Press “2783” in order to reset the purge counter. You will see: “purge:0000”
  • Press the "stop" button.
  • Press “99” to exit the maintenance mode.

    Solution:

Machine off On/Off button doesn't seem to be working. I have to pull the plug to shut off all lights

Switch on the machine while holding down the "menu"button until all the leds are flashing on/off. Now you are in "maintenance" mode. When I switched on and held down the menu button it never came to maintenance

    I get "Machine Error 46"

    Press 80 I did try 80

Press the "mono start" button several times until you see "purge: xxxx" I did not get the purge indicator

Press "2783" in order to reset the purge counter. You will see: "purge:0000" I tried the 2783, did not get the purge counter

    Press the "stop" button.

Press "99" to exit the maintenance mode.

After the steps above, which I realize did not go according to your message, it came back to the error message saying "Unable to clean".

Unable to clean

If the message is 'Unable to Clean: Error 46' I would recommend checking out this video.
If however you are receiving 'Error 4F' this is a mechanical issue and I would advise getting in touch with a printer technician or Brother themselves.

My brother 5840CN. lit says unable to print. the manual says to take the jam out - there was no jam. Turn it off, then on. i did that. It still says unable to print, look at troubleshooting page

errr.....No, no it does not. The Manual says that "unable to clean" means one of two things.....
1. The MFC has a mechanical problem.-OR-2. A foreign obstacle, such as a clip or ripped paper, is in the MFC.
but regardless, I don't believe it *IS* a 'cleaning' problem per se.Try resetting the power purge counter.

Press menu > Mono Start > 4x Arrow up after another. All lights will flash.
1. Power clean - Press 7>6>4 >Mono? Start.
2. Power Purge: 7>6 >3 >Mono Start.
Press 9>9 to exit maintenance mode. Run a print quality test print.

Error message UNABLE TO CLEAN see troubleshooting in user's guide

If you see a message that says UNABLE TO CLEAN, it usually means there is something wrong in the printing mechanism. More than likely it has a bad printhead.

Clean Unable 46

Clean unable 46 means that the ink tank is full. You need a replacement tank installed and the count reset. This is a holder inside for the used ink, best to be a shop repair.

Error : Unable to clean

Unable to clean means that the waste-ink "sponge" is full. If you've already checked for small paper part (which is very unlikely to cause this error message), the error is mechanical. Unfortunately, that's not something us users can change, but the machine would require to be sent to service. So if your machine is not within warranty, I'd doubt it'll be worth the service cost.

Error 46 and says unable to clean. can u help me plz

According to the manual, the unable to clean error means a mechanical problem or a foreign object in the machine: Open the scanner cover and remove
any foreign obstacles inside the
machine. If the error message
continues, disconnect the machine
from the power source for several
minutes then reconnect it.

Printer has unable to clean message

When trying to use your Brother machine you get the message "Unable to _____". The blank may be the word Change, Print, Scan or Clean and these words may vary from model to model.
This message is a general message and will appear for different reasons. It often indicates a paper jam or a mechanical issue. Complete the following to determine the possible issue.
Check for foreign objects, such as a clip or ripped paper, inside the machine.
Open the scanner cover by pulling up on the lower right corner of the cover. Look inside the machine and remove any foreign objects. If you see jammed paper or another item inside this area, gently pull it out and then close the scanner cover securely.
Then with the power on, pull the plug from the wall for several minutes. The plug it in and power the unit up.
