Question about APC Conext 900VA (cnb900) UPS System
I'm running Windows XP and have an APC Conext 900VA UPS. The APC PowerChute software installation won't detect my UPS. I have tried both the older version (1.5) that came with the UPS, as well as the newer version (2.0). I am using the COM1 port to communicate with the UPS over an APC 940-0024B serial cable. I have set the COM1 port per APC's recommendation (2400 baud, 1 Stop bit, No Parity, No Flow Control, FIFO Buffer Enabled), and checked communications using HyperTerminal. Using HyperTerminal, the UPS responds correctly per their instructions -
By the way, I was able to install the older version 1.50 software on my system running Windows 2000 Professional a few years ago, but I've since upgraded the system to Windows XP Professional.

Here is an answer I got from APC when one of my client got the same problem as you did:
The error message would pop up if the link between the computer and the UPS is weak. I cannot rule out a problem with the cable or the UPS. In order to confirm the same please try the following steps which might help :
1) Ensure that the USB cable is properly connected to the USB port of the computer.
2) If the PC was powered on before the UPS, communication will not be achieved until you disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to the host. In this case, you need to disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to establish communication.
3) Some other software is polling your USB port for another device, thus causing the UPS software to temporarily lose communication with your UPS. If this is the case, you would need to shut down that application.
4) If you have any other USB devices connected to the PC, disconnect them and then try plugging in the cable.
If the issue persists, please visit the following link which lists few troubleshooting steps :

After about 2 to 3 years the batteries usually have to be replaced. I found with our UPS's we get about 3 years maximum from the batteries. Ordering the originals from APC is rather expensive.
Locate a professional battery distributor in your area. Get the part numbers written on the batteries in your UPS, and including the detailed descriptions. You can then order these from the distributor. APC uses industry standard batteries. We found the Panasonic and Portilac brands to be excellent.
APC manufactures the UPS's. They use various battery manufactures depending on bid costing.
