Question about APC Conext 900VA (cnb900) UPS System

APC PowerChute won't detect my Conext UPS

I'm running Windows XP and have an APC Conext 900VA UPS. The APC PowerChute software installation won't detect my UPS. I have tried both the older version (1.5) that came with the UPS, as well as the newer version (2.0). I am using the COM1 port to communicate with the UPS over an APC 940-0024B serial cable. I have set the COM1 port per APC's recommendation (2400 baud, 1 Stop bit, No Parity, No Flow Control, FIFO Buffer Enabled), and checked communications using HyperTerminal. Using HyperTerminal, the UPS responds correctly per their instructions - Y returns "SM", and A makes the UPS beep and flash its LED's. What else should I do to get the PowerChute software installation to detect the UPS?

By the way, I was able to install the older version 1.50 software on my system running Windows 2000 Professional a few years ago, but I've since upgraded the system to Windows XP Professional.

SOURCE: desk top APC UPS ES750 not communicating

Here is an answer I got from APC when one of my client got the same problem as you did:

The error message would pop up if the link between the computer and the UPS is weak. I cannot rule out a problem with the cable or the UPS. In order to confirm the same please try the following steps which might help :

1) Ensure that the USB cable is properly connected to the USB port of the computer.

2) If the PC was powered on before the UPS, communication will not be achieved until you disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to the host. In this case, you need to disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to establish communication.

3) Some other software is polling your USB port for another device, thus causing the UPS software to temporarily lose communication with your UPS. If this is the case, you would need to shut down that application.

4) If you have any other USB devices connected to the PC, disconnect them and then try plugging in the cable.

If the issue persists, please visit the following link which lists few troubleshooting steps :

SOURCE: Why does my APC Conext UPS beep after power is restored?

After about 2 to 3 years the batteries usually have to be replaced. I found with our UPS's we get about 3 years maximum from the batteries. Ordering the originals from APC is rather expensive.

Locate a professional battery distributor in your area. Get the part numbers written on the batteries in your UPS, and including the detailed descriptions. You can then order these from the distributor. APC uses industry standard batteries. We found the Panasonic and Portilac brands to be excellent.

APC manufactures the UPS's. They use various battery manufactures depending on bid costing.

HOW DO I KEEP MY MINUTE MAN BACKUP TO STOP BEEPING?

If you connect it up to a Windows computer with the supplied (goofy-looking) USB cable and install the APC Monitor progam "Powerchute" available on the APC web site, you can set all the activity levels and tell it just when to beep the beeper, or turn it off completely. I have two of these in my house, and have set them to never beep. The cable is goofy because it is USB on one end and a network-type on the other end.

Powerchute personal edition is available for free download from APC. Does your ups have a USB port? The software is useless without it.

No indicator lights after replacing battery

I have one question, have you connect the battery terminal correctly the first time you install your new batteries? If not, it might be your battery fuse is blown during the process :) check your UPS battery fuse.

APC 1100CI-IN UPS NOT EORING ON GENERETOR WHAT I DO? PLZ SEND SULATION E-MAIL singhpintu987@gmail.com

Hello Sing,

There is a possibility that your UPS doesn't like the voltage or frequency that the generator is feeding it. As per an APC knowledgebase article, the size of a generator should be 3 to 5 times higher that the total Watt/VA load that it would be supporting.

There are also instances wherein the sensitivity threshold of an APC BackUPS is set too high that a slight change in voltage/sensitivity would cause the unit to switch from online to on battery too frequently. This can be addressed by lowering the sensitivity either by their APC PowerChute Personal Edition Software or via the front panel switch.

If you are going to do it via the software, it needs to be installed on your computer. Prior to downloading it, make sure that your operating system is compatible with it. Suppose that your operating system is compatible, once the program is installed you will need to open it up and look for the Sensitivity option and from there you could select Low, Medium or High.

If you are going to do it via the front panel switch/button the UPS should then be turned off but plugged in to an input source. Press and hold the On button until you see that the LEDs are flashing. Once the LED is flashing, press the button again to set the desired sensitivity. Low sensitivity would show the On Battery LED flashing. Medium is On Battery and Overload LED while High is On Battery, Overload and Replace Battery LED flashing. If you'll see a flashing Online LED it means that you are cancelling or exiting the program mode of the UPS.

Below are some helpful links from APC
*** You will need to login in APC before you can download the software. Choose the correct PowerChute Personal Edition Compatible with your OS and create an account online.

I had the same model/symptoms (no lights on the front panel). I had a compatible, though smaller, battery from a Verizon Fios backup unit, and I tried that in the UPS--it worked. That confirmed that I just needed a new battery.

Insufficient runtime available on agent

Try to do a runtime calibration using your powerchute software or SNMP agent. Check what is the runtime there, or check the runtime setting of your Powerchute software, maybe it set to more than the actual runtime of the UPS.

Erratic beeping

This is a signal that the battery is dying, and is failing the self-test. According to Conext, the battery replacement alarm goes off for one minute every five hours. You should also see the replace battery light on the front of the unit lit. Changing the battery should solve your problem.
