Worn crankshaft seals (look for black goo around the upper seal under the flywheel and lower shaft seal). Bottom seal is common and easy to fix... cheap, too!

Stuck/saturated carburetor float or bad float needle

Faulty primer bulb circuit (try disconnecting the small tube to se if the smoke stops)

Weak spark (should be a fat white spark that you can hear) or incorrect gap

Partially sheared flywheel key from insufficient flywheel nut torque (rare, but it happens, especially after do-it-yourselfer tune-ups)

Re-read the question... yes, worn rings can do this but usually will also exhibit hard starting and loss of power when mowing tall/thick grass.

If the new air filter seems to be constantly wet with fuel, it may be the reed valves.

I have a psa 225 echo weed eater. The engine readily starts but will only rev up using the choke lever back and forth. No power. What's my problem?

Carb or filter
. replace fuel filter in tank while checking both pickup and return fuel lines.
remove carb and disassemble cleaning all parts with carb cleaner and some soft air blow . look for small screen its round and about 1/4 round in carb these are so small that the gas that's available gells and plugs the openings . try to use non-ethonal high octane gas and use echo 2cycle oil .

I cleaned ports, float crankcase tube, changed out and cleaned fuel tank. Put new spark plug in. problem is smoke from carb and I find fuel mixed with oil on spark plug and smoke coming from carb.

Chances are the float level in the carburetor is set too high and the fuel is flooding. you need to set the float level and this should correct your problem

My Troy Bilt self propelled lawn mower keeps fouling spark plug out after one use. Why?

Hi , it can often be something as simple as the engine needing a oil change as oil looses viscosity/thins with use ( use correct grade ), replace or clean the oil filter and a good service or something more complex which requires a full engine stripdown like worn piston ring/oil scraper ring causing oil to flow up the cylinder walls and fouling the combustion chamber or oil leaking up through the valve stem oil seals , also storing the machine tilted can cause oil to collect in the chamber or petrol to leak into the sump causing the oil to thin.
Hope this helps , please rate accordingly

Blower would not run at anything above 1/2 throttle. then it would not start at all. put a carb kit in and not it starts and runs at higher rpms but when it warms up it dies. when snapping the throttle it...

If the gas is old, for example, last season, change the fuel ..drain the tank, carb and fuel line.
Also clean the air filter... this can have similar effects on start/run.

Pull the spark plug and clean it also, you can use spray carb cleaner on the tip, and then clean with fine sandpaper.
then replace the fuel with fresh fuel/oil mix.

A good spray can of carb clean will work to clean any build up in the carb jets, fuel line etc...

Engine problems on a kx 250 2 stroke

On a 2 stroke bike cause of smoke is due to excess oil in the fuel oil mixture, incomplete combustion in the cylinder or the engine oil finding it way in through the piston rings into the firing chamber. Check the oil levels and clean the plugs, which must be black in color by now, so replace if possible and if engine oil is low, the change the piston rings. Also look up the carburetor jets/nozzles are clean and the engine gets the correct fuel/air mixture by adjusting both fuel and air jets(turns)...sodeep

My lawnboy 10304 runs about one minute and shuts down. Any ideas?

It sounds like it is 2 stroke.
Carefully remove the carb bowl, by undoing the brass bolt.
Examine the brass bolt for a small pin-hole in the side.
Use a piece of corn-broom NEVER anything else !!! and poke the hole(S) to make sure they are clear.
Blow out with air if available.
You can use this method to clean out all the carb orifices carefully.

Hope it helps,

Fuel starvation most likely caused by plugged fuel filter. Best way to check/fix is to drain gas tank then remove on/off/res petcock assembly. Filter is removed with assembly and can be cleaned with carb cleaner, blown out with compressed air, and re-used. Do not get solvent or carb cleaner on any rubber parts as this will harden them. Re-assemble and start with fresh gas. Oil in breather is normal if not excessive and can be sign of clogged air filter or worn rings. Fix fuel and air filters and re-check. Good luck, Techjoel

Homelite trimmer dies every time I squeeze the handle

The engine is not getting enough fuel to the high speed jet. The issue may be one of the following:
  1. Restricted fuel filter (in the fuel tank)
  2. Pin hole in the fuel line (are bubbles seen traveling in the fuel line?).
  3. Improperly mixed fuel/oil
  4. Poor grade oil ~ never use outboard or genaric 2 cycle oil, use the manufactures oil or gold spectra (available at motorcycle shops).
  5. Mal-adjusted carburetor, if you changed the brand oil you used in the past the carburetor may need to be readjusted to compensate, or switch back to the oil used before the issue occured.

Mower starting but smoking heavily, just topped off oil in Toro

Mowers smoke for the following reasons:
Too much oil.
Badly clogged air filter can cause oil to be sucked by piston rings.
Worn piston rings.
Worn cylinder walls.
Cracked block/piston.
Excessive blow-by getting sucked into carb. Caused by worn rings.
The only thing most people can fix is the too much oil or clogged air filter. Try those first.
